do not send messages when <enter> is pressed. change to another shortcut key.
I have to edit my messages several times because every time I press enter for a Carriage Return, it sends instead. I know the shortcut key for Carriage Return is SHIFT+ENTER but its not very intuitive and makes for miscommunication. Thank you for your consideration.
I find the enter key for sending messages incredibly annoying. Why would anyone sane come up with that idea?
Please change that! It can't be that hard...

Suggest allowing the user to toggle behavior for enter/shift+enter functionality in settings. When unchecked it behaves as default, when checked functionality is reversed (ENTER = Next line SHIFT+ENTER = send).

I have to type replies in a separate editor because of the lack of this feature.
Nick Robinson commented
How ridiculous is it not to have this feature!
allow ctrl-enter or button to sent
have enter used for new line
better yet, have it available as a preference option
Ed Clement commented
I mean really, how hard is it to have a setting for this in the "General" configuration section?
Block the the auto-send "feature". You would make more people happy than you would upset. Its no big deal to hit a button to send.

Echo others here. Wish this was an option, and would rather the default was to add a new line, NOT to send.

Sending messages by accident when I just wanted to insert a new line is my number one annoyance with MS Teams. It is not even consistent within MS Teams. Start a bullet list and all of a sudden Enter does not send the message anymore.
So many times I do this, or I see a new message that just says "Hi," and know I have to wait for the full message. I know that you can switch to format mode but this must be ridiculously easy to fix, even just adding the option to disable would save users from being made to feel stupid by this unexpected sending

Echoing others... Slack and LinkedIn allow you to change the send option to Ctrl+Enter.
Please catch up, Microsoft. :-)
Yes please make it configurable. All my other messaging Apps use <enter> for a new paragraph and <shift><enter> for sending. So confusing to have Teams use other shortcuts.

Slack allows you to change this to Ctrl + Enter which makes it a lot easier, not saying this should be the default, but at least allow us to change it (also in the linux app not just the browser)
Maxime Massaer commented
Definitely, please do the same as on LinkedIn (which is owned by Microsoft now btw, so they can take it easily...)
I agree! This feature should be changed! I want options!
John Kenny commented
I too could really use this option in Teams as i use the enter key on IM far too much so rather than trying to remember to use Shift + Enter removing this Send on Enter in Teams Chat would be idea and as others have mentioned this is an option in majority of other IM apps so please add this to teams ASAP..

LinkedIn on browser is one of the best examples of giving people the choice on this. It would be a great option on Teams.
Shift+ Enters is a short cut for sending email, so why not make sending chat consistent with that, then people can use Enter for carriage returns like normal.

This is a model example of a design that violates POLA (Principle of Least Astonishment).
The action performed when pressing the [Enter] key is inconsistent, depending on whether or not ...
* the formatting toolbar is enabled
* you are currently writing/editing a bullet/numbered list.
Austin Barrett commented
This should be like any other chat application, and have either ENTER to send or ENTER to make a newline, or (better) have a checkbox below that says "Use ENTER to send". If checked, ENTER would send. If not checked, ENTER would make a newline, and a send button would appear beside the option. This would clearly also serve the purpose of communicating to the user what ENTER will do.
Instead, Teams is inconsistent, where sometimes SHIFT+ENTER will make a newline and ENTER will send, and other times, ENTER will make a paragraph break, and SHIFT+ENTER will make a newline.
It's annoying, because there's no indication of what will happen, and it's inconsistent. For example, I was typing a comment with a bulleted list in it. I typed the first line, and then hit SHIFT+ENTER out of caution. Then I started a bulleted list, and when I reached the end of the list, I hit SHIFT+ENTER out of caution to make a newline, and it made a newline within the bullet. In order to escape the bulleted list, I had to hit ENTER. Then I typed some more stuff, using ENTER for newline since I had established that ENTER meant newline. Finally I wanted to make a change to the first line and break it into two lines, so I moved my cursor back to the top and pressed ENTER, and it sent the message. So in the same message, depending on where the cursor is, it will either create a newline or send (a non-reversable action, since deleted messages stay there but with the text replaced with a message about it being deleted, and if you edit, it will forever say "edited").
This _must_ be a mistake, because there is no way anybody would ever be OK with behavior this inconsistent, right?
