Allow turning off automatic spell checking
Please add the ability to turn off the "check spelling as I type" feature in the Microsoft Teams Windows app. I use the web app instead of the Windows app simply because I cannot turn off this feature in the Windows app. My opinion is probably in the minority, but I find automatic, real-time spell checking (with the squiggly red lines) to be the most annoying feature ever implemented in any computer program -- even worse than "Clippy" the Windows paperclip help assistant.
Thank you for your continued feedback. The team has been hard at work on improving all of our users’ experiences, and now you have the ability to turn off automatic spell checking!
Please see documentation for changing settings, here: https://support.microsoft.com/office/change-settings-in-teams-b506e8f1-1a96-4cf1-8c6b-b6ed4f424bc7. Thanks!

I have an option to disable this:
Settings > General > Enable spell check
This request if from Nov/2017... you start to "work on it" since Feb/2020. It's Jun/2020.
How difficult is to put a check button and disable a feature?
Agreed! Also, please turn off the offensively prescriptivist "grammar" check, which is actually a usage check. Usage isn't algebra; the so-called rules are complicated and take a lot of study to learn properly. Writing is my field and I don't need an algorithm telling me I broke some "rule."

How is it possible that developers and product managers are still making the assumption that people only ever use one language, and can arbitrarily decide which language that should be? :-(
Simply infuriating... Especially for software over which users likely have no choice because it is part of their employers environment.
I want to turn on the "check spelling" but I can't find any option.
please, how hard can it be to include some checkbox to disable stuff like that???
Wtf, you just mark everything wrong in a different language than the app is set to and don't even have an option to disable this. Are you realizing that your product is used all over the world, most people using 2 or more languages? MS again looks like a small Bulgarian startup company here.

Go to REVIEW from top menu.
Click on "Spelling & Grammar" drop down.
Select "Set Proofing Language".
In the dialog that opens, uncheck "Don't check spelling or grammar".
Make sure to select the entire document or specific sections where you want spelling and grammar checks disabled.
How hard can it be to do this???
Just on visit to check on how the work is going. It will soon be June, and as of today I still get the annoying squiggly red lines in my Teams app.
Apparently "I've", short for "I have", is incorrectly spelt. Spell checker suggests "I've" as a fix. *facepalm*.
why is it so hard???
How long can this take? Just do it already please.
This spelling check is making me look like a ****** and it's damaging my standing within the company.
It's really frustrating to have your words replaced when trying to write in another language
This was brought up as a complaint a year and a half ago, and (just) 2 months ago, "The team is working on adding an option to turn off spell checking."
Come on. I'd have lost my job after three months of this. This is bad software design -- you don't implement something like this without a way to turn it off! HOW HARD CAN THIS BE??

What I really don't understand is how the spellchecker can be as terrible as it is. It flags "I've" and "I'll" - even Word '97 could cope with contractions...
I firmly agree with Paul and hopefully Microsoft can give us the ability to turn off the "check spelling as I type" feature in the next update.
I'd like to add my voice to those below. This is extraordinarily annoying. Please provide a way to turn this off.
Same here. I am using Teams in English but I most of my meetings in Teams I correspond in other languages. EXTREMELY annoyed.
