Emoji's should not auto-complete before hitting the space bar
When typing out an emoji, if you type : followed by a specific subset of characters (s, d, and o are a few examples) the emoji auto-completes to a animated face even if you wanted to type out another emoji (:soon: can not be type as the :s will become an emoji before you can finish with oon:). This should stop and the normal list of emojis should pop up with the face as an option to choose.
You can press Ctrl+Z right after an emoji appears, this will revert it back to it's text enabling you to type other things.
What happened to the intellisense capability to type ":" followed by some text to get a short list of emojis? Seems that feature was killed?
Why is this still an issue in 2021 when this was brought up in 2017? This is such a basic functionality that Microsoft has failed to implement properly. Please fix this.
It's not autocompleteing emoji, its actually using the old Lync smileys. This can be solved if they just got rid of the old smileys and just stick to emoji. There's already an idea open for that.

No delay here, I can't type  without doing the workaround Chris Wiswell mentioned. How am I to drool on my coworkers efficiently until this is fixed?
This seems to be a bit better, as now when you type something like :p there's a bit of a delay before becoming the emoji. This allows you to type something like :pi and get the list.
This really needs to be fixed. Typing :pizza: is impossible because :p immediately switches to a smiley.

Yeah, I had to find a workaround for this. If I want the pineapple, :pineapple should do it, but... :p converts to a "tongue sticking out" before I can continue. Workaround: type pin, then go to the beginning of the word and put a colon. Then go to the end of the word and either type the "e" from "pine," or delete the "n". In either case, the list of available emoji will appear.
