Restrict ability to start new conversation (thread)
It would be helpful to restrict the ability to start a new conversation to specific users in the channel.
This would allow those users to post conversation starters and others could only reply.
Since the focus in channels defaults to the "start new conversation", most users do not realize they are not actually replying to a previous conversation.
it would be great if this was possible.
It seems that all of a sudden some of my co-workers now see a "Start a New Conversation" button, rather than a window in which someone can accidentally type a reply by starting a new conversation. However, not all of us have this new button. We are all running the same version of Teams. Check for updates doesn't get it. How do we get that new button?
Yes, we need this functionality as we want a conversation about a stated topic but don't want people opening up new topics

Completely hiding the interface is sub-optimal if you still want to allow users to use the function as needed.
A UI change is better. As mentioned here, move the interface to the top of the screen is one option. Another one is to collapse the interface into a (+) button is another idea. This will may increase the cost it takes user enough that they realize it is not a chat interface.
I agree with Tom Castiglia. We need a way to hide "Start a new conversation." bar. I work for a large company and it makes this tool very frustrating as we need to explain over and over again to people not to use this bar, wasting large amounts of time .
I support this feature, as it's useful for some Teams which are about communication and only Team Owners need to post, everyone else needs to just Reply.

This is perfect and would help our teams confusion immensely.

There is another idea on UserVoice to place the "Start a new conversation" box on top of the page which I would prefer instead of restricting the ability to start a new conversation.

Restricting the ability to start a new conversation should be a setting that is applicable both to specific channels and specific individuals. For instance, preventing Guests from being able to start a new conversation, or preventing everyone from starting new conversations in the General channel.
I agree - change the UI - it is not the users who are at fault if most do the wrong thing
I think that part off the problem is the placement of the "start a new conversation" bar. In Yammer, and pretty much all applications these days it's at the top of the page. It make it more clear to the user that they're starting something new.

I agree 100% with Tom Castiglia. Making it more like the phone app conversation button would be worth consideration.

I also find it too easy to accidentally start a new conversation when I meant to reply to a prior conversion. I don't see the solution to this as restricting users from starting a new conversation. A better approach would be to change the UI so that to start a new conversation you need to click a button first before the textbox is displayed for the new conversation.
