Raw markdown editor for messaging
Hi MS guys,
Can you please add a simple raw markdown editor for messaging?
Currently the markdown input is so unstable.
This is particularly as you currently cannot format single words in a paragraph as code.

Totally agree with Jean-Francois Dagenais from below. It's clear that no developers in Microsoft actually us this application (at least not competent ones), and only sales people are pushing for MS customers to purchase it now.

If it was a simple markdown editor (i.e. just a text area) then pressing *up arrow* would be a bit more stable.

What ever happened to "developers, developers, developers"!! What developer wants to have his "code" live formatted while he/she is typing! I understand the program is used by non devs as well, so it should definitely be a preference.
With all the irritants I have to deal with all day long, I really feel the Teams developers themselves don't even use this software! If they did, it would be usable. The only reason I use this annoying software is because my company forces me to. Sad.

Seriously, whats the point of using markdown formatting, when the editor actively fights you when you try to enter it.
Just copy the same logic that slack uses.
Heavy support, I write markdown, I know markdown, I can edit markdown. Having to deal with the display adjusting as I mark thing with formatting is super distracting.
Markdown is designed to be human readable so there is no need to format it.
At most I would recommend formatting the text but keeping the markup characters, make *italic* appear italic and **bold** appear bold for some feedback, but keep my *s in place.

This drives me crazy. I have no interest in using a WYSIWYG editor, especially when it fails at basic use cases like copy/pasting Markdown messages.

A markdown WYSIWYG might work for those that like the current experience...but the **** thing is buggy and frustrating to use when you know specifically what you want.
Worse..copying content from other sources often doesn't copy well.

I agree with this feature. For me, the current markdown "render on the fly" is not working well.
As a step 1, I would be completely happy with markdown support and no preview until I send the message. If I see something odd, I can always edit the text, fix any formatting, and then resend. If you are worried about existing users fussing, make it a setting like "render text as you type" that someone can turn on/off.
If you want to push it to a Step 2. In the current version, there is a "Format" button below a message entry text box. What would be helpful would be for either the default to be Markdown (with a preview button you can click), or something like you see the with Atom text editor where you get a split screen. As you enter markdown text in the left panel, you see the rendering on the right.
If we just get the step 1, I will be very very happy.

Agree. The whole idea of markdown is that it can be typed and edited as simple raw text. The formatting should be applied *afterwards*!
Peter Palotas commented
Yes, this should really be a top priority. The current editor is so buggy it's just terrible.
Rhys Lloyd commented
Yeah I would like to be able to preview my markdown before sending, but let me write the markdown without instant formatting.

Agreed. There are various other requests asking for this. Any way to merge ideas and keep their votes and comments?
