Free version of Teams or be condemned in small adoption rate.
Slack and even Discord grow because they are fresh, but also free. Especially Slack is free for up to 10 people. Which is great for small talented teams. And these are the people who adopt it fast.
Tada! :) The free version of Teams is here!

Not saying all functionality within Microsoft Teams should be free, but I agree that there needs to be at least a 'free tier' with an economical step up to a paid SKU. With Microsoft's resurgence in education, led by OneNote, every school I've been to appears to be adopting Slack because it's free, self-administered & without initial licensing concerns. And the irony is they're also using OneNote, but won't use Teams because it simply isn't available to them.
The lack of access to Teams is dramatically retarding Microsoft in Education.
If you're not aware of the rapid adoption of Slack in education, this is a major blind spot in your strategy because as you know, once a school gets into Slack, they are never, ever leaving. The institutional knowledge built up within Slack & it's data structure won't migrate and there are no tools for migrating content from Slack to Teams. And frankly, they don't have the IT support/bandwidth to make a change.
Our family is familiar with many of the elite private schools in our area & many use Slack or have an existing solution in place. We recently visited one of the most exclusive K-12 schools in the nation... and they recently just started using Slack with all their students despite, I believe, owning Office 365 Education licensing. I'm a blue badge so please feel free to contact me if you're interested in details.
Also, to add to this, Hangouts Chat (an upcoming MS Teams competitor) is going to be offered at a free tier, which would compete with teams, but at a free price...
I agree! This would be a great addition! MS Teams is an amazing product! If there was a free tier, more people would adopt Teams! They would get invested into the MS Cloud and ultimately jump to paid plan once they realize how awesome teams is.
