Search results should show the full thread
Searching for something works (mostly), however if the thing you're search for is sufficiently far back in time, then it's nigh impossible to actually get results back. Clicking the message says "go to chat to see the rest", but clicking on that does nothing but take you back to the chat at the current time, rather than the target message. If you bookmark the message and try to get at the location in chat via that, then the client just lags and eventually crashes. (while chewing up 100% CPU) Tried the desktop client (developer preview), web client Chrome, web client Edge, all won't work for really big chats. It seems like it's trying to load the entirety of the chat conversation between now and the point in time that the message happened and then also trying to render and scroll up for that. This is crazy inefficient. It should load a few screens before that chat message, a few after, and then redraw. (so that total effort is nearly 0 rather than "10,000 lines of chats")
The team is currently working on this. I will let you know when I have more updates.
It's a pity that so solid application is still missing basic working functionality of searching and viewing of history conversation :(((

This is utter ********. Every IM ever has had a working history search but not Teams in 2020. And it's a bug because it happens erratically. I was trying to show it to my colleague after wasting 15 minutes scrolling and it suddenly worked during screen sharing...
This would be helpful. Thanks!
Three years after the original request and this feature is still not present. I had to page up for 20 minutes for find the full thread/
At first I said to myself, wow I must not be doing something right. Surely the chat search (only showing the individual result instead of thread) can't be how it works. I found KQL search syntax, videos of searching, and eventually found my way here.
Please add this feature, it's really painful and antiquated to not have it.

For long time, restarting teams or restarting my computer solved this issue for me.
We are trying to use Teams for knowledge sharing so it's critical for me that this works.
It seems to not be working anymore, however.

I just spent 15-20 minutes scrolling back to see a conversation in December. Just scrolling, that's it. I could search for it, but I only saw the one chat bubble that had my one keyword. Search is light-years behind all email clients and probably all chat clients.
I also saw this request posted years ago...please stop ignoring this.
+1 This issue is making me (extremely) angry every time I need to search something older than a week.
Any updates to searching and then having quick access to the thread around the search terms? Anything more than a month old is not accessible in a realistic amount of time.
Would really love to be able to search for a string and have Teams return more than just that string as a result. You've decided to replace Skype for Business with Teams, so maybe Teams should try to be at least as good as what it's replacing. Currently, Teams is the Windows Vista of collaboration applications.
Is there an ETA on this? This is a pretty basic feature that virtually all chat platforms have from the get-go. Considering this is a solution designed business use, we don't have the ability to just use a different platform where this functionality exists. We have no option but to use a product that frequently falls flat-- both in terms of existing functionality and lack thereof. Please make this a priority. It's been a request for a very long time. :(
just tried to search for some text- having been told all messages are searchable when this was installed....
but it cannt find it. what on earth is wrong with this stupid app!
unfortunately we are required to use teams at work, the search feature is worse than bad and just about unusable. we have thousands of users and searching on just about any key word brings up millions of useless hits - filtering by user or a group of users is totally useless and impractical. there's so much wasted time and lost information in the system ---- so bad ---- for goodness sake microsoft --- fix this
Completely worthless. I'm searching for a word in a chat I just had and it doesn't anything.
This is the reason I left Teams. I don’t understand what they were thinking. Worst search function I’ve ever seen in any app.
That and the lack of a reply function like in whatsapp
Search in Teams still sucks!
Want to have this on the roadmap!
Want to be able to search in all content in teams - avoiding having to search in sharepoint that gives a complete different user experience!

All I want is to find every conversation with the text "hello world!" What am I missing?

This should be voted more, and should already be done. Lack of context is useless. We search for a particular topic, and usually the important information is a few messages before or after that found message.
+1. If there is no context, why would I search this sting in the first place.
