Allow Group Chats to be Converted into a Team Channel
There are times when people start a conversation as a chat with a few people, and the chat gathers momentum and eventually becomes a regular chat room. It would be great to be able to convert a private chat into a Team Channel. The way it could work is, if the members of the chat are all part of the same team, you have a function where you can select that team from a dropdown list, and "Convert to Team Channel". The private chat would become a permanent team, and all previous chat history would be retained in the newly created team.

I desperately need this option

Something along these lines would be appreciated. We know the rules and we get what we choose today, no problem. But it would nice if we could change this rule in the way described. Thank you!

I would agree, starting a chat and having the ability to migrate/merg this chat to Teams channel would save a lot of time and confusion.
Here are two scenarios. 1) A chat was started and a whole lot of ideas are discussed. Then all of a sudden, they want to create a new Team group. 2) There is a team group but then decided that they want to move the conversation into a channel.
I believe that all of the discussion can be imported into a conversation starting with the first one as being the subject of the conversation.
For instance, I started a chat with 10 ten people. We discussed for a long time. Then being owner of the chat, they can then click on an ellipses to move the chat into a conversation of a channel. All of the responses will be in that channel. After it is completed, the chat is deletes. I would really love to see this feature.
Absolutely agree! Please can we let this get the attention it deserves.
Yep, sometimes we create a simple group chat and then it works so well it grows arms and legs and wants to become a Team but it can't. At this point it would really help the chat group collaborate better as a Team so would really appreciate this getting the attention it deserves.
I am flabergasted this is not an option! Please make it an option asap
I would add to this and say not just a chat, but chat from within a calendar invite. Also make it easier when scheduling a Teams call in MS Outlook calendar that it then prompts you to ask if the call/chat should use an existing channel from an existing team group.
WTF MICROSOFT. I need EXACTLY THIS now! PLEASSSSSSE HELP!!!!!!!!!!<look at all the exclamation marks. They indicate how serious I am

MS Teams is great for online meetings, but it is a real nightmare as a text collaboration tool! Сonverting chats to channels, as well as moving channels between teams and moving messages anywhere, would greatly help manage this chaos.
Interestingly, despite the huge number of votes, Microsoft hasn't done anything for many years. What's in the way? Are there any architectural obstacles?
This would be a great feature for Teams. Please consider prioritizing it.
This would be a great addition til Teams. Please consider prioritzing this as an added feature anytime soon.
Hi - I agree with this. It would be so handy to be able to convert a group chat to a team channel. Any chance you can make it so?
yes - this would be a very valuable addition - it's clearly obvious that this situation happens for many people!
Only been using Teams for a couple of years. Once a month or so since then, I've wanted to convert a chat to a channel because I loose a specific topic thread. I would imagine that this would be considered a valuable feature for somewhere between all of us and 100% of us. No doubt the others have already switched to Slack.
I guess for context, I'm a manager at my company and it's infuriating to have valuable interactions and discussion topics locked into ad-hoc chats that gain a life of their own. Chat to Channel conversion would enable a natural evolution discussions from few to many. It's even a enabler of ideation which is sort of the point, no?

Like most people here I'm surprised this isn't already a feature. Please implement.

I definitely want this feature.
I create group chats all of the time. They sometimes get traction and at that point, I need to convert them to a team.

I am positively dismayed that this capability is not ALREADY available!
I just want to move, merge, convert, port an existing Teams Chat into a Teams Team site, as a new Channel for that Teams Team site. The membership of each are not quite the same, but that should be a mere obstacle, and not a ROADBLOCK.
As it is, given our Teams rollout plan provided us with the Chat feature first, months before the complete rollout of the rest of Teams, the inability to convert the Teams Chat content into the Teams Site as a new channel, is seriously impeding our full adoption of Teams and all the additional value Teams stands to provide, over and above the Teams Chat.
