Renaming would also be great.
I agree with ALL of these comments - Why has this suggestion been declined? What is the reasoning behind not being able to at least edit the "General" channel name? This suggestion should be reconsidered because it seems like it could be a quick fix to make this an editable required channel.
Dear Team ... I am very disappointed that you have decided to decline this request … this is not a 'nice to have' request ... this is a significant limitation to the adoption of MS Teams by your customers (myself included) ... MS Teams is advertised as a flexible solution that can be tailored to suit your needs (“for departments, teams, projects, or just for fun” etc)... the current solution, at best, leaves a useless channel that is continuously unused, which is more than just an inconvenience - it looks shoddy/unpolished/unprofessional, and risks disengaging the users. I humbly urge you to reconsider this request

This is incredulous what is the ethos behind have "General" as a mandatory channel. This feels like a techy solutions to ensuring there is at least one channel per group versus business reality. As the MD\CTO for my company I am forever fighting against "Misc" directories spread everyone that quickly become the biggest directory\folder etc now MS has enshrined this issue for all? If there is a business ethos concept I am missing showing there are more PROS vs CONS to this then outline its basis else please re-consider its existence - thanks.
Not being able to delete or rename this channel means that we cannot create our own business processes in Teams. In my company, for example, it's counterproductive to have a channel that people can dump anything into. So, in your primary competitor team chat system for example, we always rename the default channel to "off topic", and then insure that all added channels are relevant to business processes. Works great! Not being able to do this in Teams is a problem.
let make it as we wish it.
Just a rename option please!

The team ought to reconsider.
Teams team, hate to share bad news but the customers are declining the declination!
What is that? Don't we at least get to hear the reason for that?

Please allow us to RENAME or remove the GENERAL CHANNEL (general makes no sense)
Would also like to REMOVE files and conversation (and keep just WIKI, or just conversation)
the team declined the suggestion - get a new team!
We would like the feature to rename or delete the General channel as we find it becomes a messy dumping area for random conversations. We like to have clear channels in most cases for specific areas of discussion.
We should have the ability to change the name to something other than general, or hide the general channel. The nature of some projects doesn't warrant the use of a general channel.

We configured our Teams team, but then decided we wanted more folks to use it. Unfortunately, we had been using General to chat and make decisions within our group. We can't archive those threads or replace the General section. This is blocking us from growing our team.

Adding my voice and my vote to this.
I'm currently in the process of setting up various teams and channels for a customer, and the inability to delete and/or rename the general channel is a massive limitation. And as others have said, surely a relatively easy change to make.
At the very least the user community deserves an explanation / rationale for why the product team has declined this suggestion.

Please change the decision to not allow deleting or renaming of the general channel. It makes the process even that much more difficult to navigate system even more difficult. I agree this should be a no-brainer. At the minimum, we should have the ability to edit the name.

I agree that we need this, what's happening on my team is that random stuff is being dumped in the General channel instead of the appropriate ones which defeats the purpose because now the whole team is getting messages that aren't actually intended for them. This is also making it hard to find information you need at a later time because you don't know if the message was put in the correct channel or just dumped in General. If the channel must exist and is always listed first we should at least be able to rename it something like "Everyone" or "Important Only" so people are more aware that it should not be used as a general dumping ground despite the fact that the name indicates that it should be.
Why on earth has the team "declined this suggestion"? At least having the ability to rename the "General" channel should be a no-brainer.
Is this yet another example of MS not doing user testing before releasing a product?

I came to this page because I was trying to find out how to do this.
You lose to Slack on this. "General" doesn't hold any sort of meaning -- is this a channel for announcements? For chatter? No one can actually leave the channel, so why on earth can't we rename it? Or delete it?
+1 to the voices begging you to reconsider. This is terrible.

Is there a particular reason for this decision? I feel if you could give an explanation for this feature being cemented as it is, then that could perhaps help those of us that struggle with it to cope with it's inconvenient nature.
After delving into working in teams and understanding it better, we have a different way we would like to structure our channels and now after having added a bunch of info to the "General" channel, we will have to add it all again to another channel if we can't just rename it. Not sure why this is such an issue and can't be easily done? Of all the complicated things this software does, you'd think you could change a name!
