I still have to figure out why something useless as a chat needs to be the most important in Teams.
We have Teams where the only "discussion" is "someone joined the team" and "someone has been removed from the team.
Private channels are great but having the "General" channel exposing everyone added to the team makes it impossible to add guests from different vendors.
Just started with our first Teams experience due to the end of life of skype....
The idea of Teams, having all collaboration in one app....great.
But the fact that you don't have control file/folder management is very disappointing.
This definitely needs a fix before we will use it's full potential.

It's clear at this point that this is not a simple change for the Teams development team to make, or you'd assume they would have made it by now. As others have pointed out, this should be low-hanging fruit for the Teams team to pick and appease a large chunk of users.
The General channel is likely very important to the backend structure of Teams and how it works, but I still don't see how a workaround to hide the General channel or give the channel an alias that's displayed to every user so even if the General channel name is hard-coded and can't be safely changed, at least it can appear to be called whatever the administrator of a Teams instance wants it to be called.
MS Teams team, please do something about this soon. Responsiveness here to community feedback has declined... at least give us some communication
We have yet to find an explanation of why the General channel exists. Please add the ability to hide or remove it if possible.

Idea raised almost 3 years ago. @Warren/@Alex, where are we with this ?
It took an incredibly long time to get something as simple as private channels - something that makes good business sense, I'm curious as to why this wasn't addressed right along with it. Having a general channel just clutters things and make it less organized as it can neither be deleted or renamed. It's confusing to the users as well.
MS seriously make this happen already. Since it's taking so long and you CLEARLY have heard about this common complaint, my guess is this is deeply integrated in the functionality of Teams. Should at the very least add a switch to hide posts only to the owner. We are trying to use the new per-channel private permissions and it leaves a trail log of any creation, deletion, user membership messages for all to see.
An easy solution would be to name the General channel something like <Team Name> General. Having multiple generals confuses people.
I came to know that General Channel can't be deleted, well, ok at least we can rename it.
With the recent change to the desktop app (ie. when working within a channel, the team name no longer shows up at the top of the screen), it is imperative that functionality be added to rename the General tab.
We use Teams for project management for new home construction and have over 150 different "Teams" running simultaneously (we have a team set up for each project as each project is managed by a distinct group of employees, while some employees work on all teams). Within each team, we use only one channel (that being the General channel). Because each team/project follows a similar format, the teams all look the same, and the only way for our employees to tell which team they were working in was the banner across the top. Without this banner (it now just says "General" as they are working in the General tab), we are running into major issues.
Please either restore the Team Name in the header or allow us to rename the general tab asap.
The General page is annoying and a waste of time.
Each time a new member is added adds clutter to the page. Make it a hidden tab that is accessible to the owner of the page.
Or at least give the owner the ability to hide notifications, delete posts, add announcements that stay at the top of the page.

I'd like users to the team to be greeted by a more specific/friendly channel name, like "Welcome", or, "Getting Started". General is too, well, general. It's vague and gives a sloppy first impression. I don't understand why you force this choice on your users.

19 pages over nearly three years of people asking to be able to rename the General channel. C'mon guys, this is the definition of low-hanging fruit. Make the change.
Let's get rid of this general stuff, thanks!

please let us hide/rename/delete the general file on sharepoint and teams on office 365 sharepoint cloud and teams online and application. Thank you.
Need to be able to change name of "General" channel, or at least be able to hide it.
If you can not delete or rename it then you should be able to hide it for the user
2 Years?? Why is this taking so long? How many more surveys need be filled out for you to listen to your consumers?!
Please give us the creative freedom when using your software!
No freedom = Apple Products

The General channel appears as a folder in your documents with your SharePoint site by default. We need to be able to rename this folder in our business to align with the naming convention of our folders!
Either that or make it so we can remove it.
