Actually, The more I think about it - the real issue is two fold ::
1) When searching, the general channel doesn't show up in a channel list
2) Some companies, like Property Management firms, Arch/Engineering/Construction firms, to name a few, have dozens of projects - using the first letters of the first two words in the channel icon is cute and otherwise useless. Keeping it is fine, however I recommend ADDING the channel name in small above the sub-channel title.
Hello, This is very frustrating and I already wasted a lot of time trying to delete the general channel. It is full of garbage and people will be confused going there. Why do you not allow the admin to set up how they want??
I will add my comment too - would really like to change "general" channel name :) Wierd that it seems such a small thing but it has not been done :)
THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE 2017, IT'S OCTOBER 2020 NOW. How many years does it take to change this feature? Just wondering ....
This is really important for all team users, it has received 514 comments, numerous votes. Why is it so hard to rename/hide a channel ?????? It's not rocket science
Using "channels" (a.k.a. folders) in SharePoint is poor document managment practice. I can understand why some people with no idea about metadata may like to stick withy folders to organise their files but businesses need robust solutions, not simplistic tools that promote outdated practices.

Can we please get this added? This is such a simple thing that would make quality of life on teams much better.
This has been a problem since the launch of Teams. This should be a simple fix. At least let us name it when we start a new team, rather than forcing us to have a tab named "general". "What would you like your first channel to be named?" or something. Or force us to have at least one channel in the Team, but it doesn't matter which one it is.
Please respond to our pleas. We want to be able to edit/move/archive and otherwise control the General channel as any other channel.
By not responding, this proves that a poor design decision was made and being compounded by not addressing the needs of your users.
I'm enjoying all the functionality Teams and Office 365 has to offer. Not being able to rename or hide this General channel is the single most annoying thing about it. Everytime I see a list of thing attributed to General - but I can't tell which team General thread - I go and check whether today is the day I can rename the channel in all the teams. Please make it so users can rename or at least hide if there is at least one other channel available.
Please can we have the ability to amend the "general" name on the first channel on teams. It will help with specifics around purpose of the channel whereas at present, it causes confusion on where to add comments.

I made a mistake creating General with the schedule I could not fix so students VERY confused. I created a NEW channel but now they go to both so I want to RENAME but better, remove the General channel plus the mistaken additional channels I created thinking I was creating RooMs to meet in small groups. I want to name them Room #1 but I was too clever naming them famous social workers (I teach social work). Please allow the elimination of a channel once it has served its purpose or is no longer valuable to the team.

Any decisions on this? Last update was March 12, 2019 that needs feedback. Now we need feedback ;-)
Why is this request being ignored. The general channel has no purpose except to confuse users and make any company using teams look unprofessional. Well done Microsoft.Well done.
No one knows what General means so if we add a new one, there is still this General one. We need to be able to rename it.

Having an unstructured channel in the workplace is a major problem.
I want the team members to focus and think before they post. Our channels are topic- or project-based.
The General channel is a honey pot for random stuff and posts, often with distracting content or something that belongs to a different channel and therefore makes communication in the group more complicated than it has to be.
I agree with the idea of a default 'General' channel after group creation. But please let us at least rename it.
Please let me delete or rename the General channel.
Any particular reason why they declined this feature?
