Tag for status updates
Skype for Business supports tagging for status updates. It's a really buried feature, but one that is really helpful when trying to get in touch with someone. Would love to make this more easily available in Microsoft Teams to be better able to catch people as they become available (e.g. know when they come in in the morning, when they finish their current meeting, etc.).
I’m excited to announce that this feature is in internal testing, and should be coming soon! Thanks!~ Alex
This is great. We also need the ability to tag those we have not chatted with recently.

I love the feature of being able to click on ellipsis to the right of the person's name and click on "notify when available." However, I'm trying to flag someone NOT in my recent or pinned chats lists. I don't see a way to do that. I've searched for them by name and clicked on people. Nothing there. Alternately, I searched on the name and clicked on messages. It brought up all the past messages I've had with this person, but since none were recent - she's not in my recent list. I hovered to the right of her name where all the snippets of past messages were shown - no ellipsis.

Hi, is this feature available yet? Would be really useful and can't find it anywhere in Teams. Used to it in Skype...
Is there any indication when the maximum number of people you can have notifications on is going to be changed to more than 15?
This feature I found to be exceptionally useful in Skype and the limit of the number of people is hampering my ability to contact people.
This feature actually does exist. Go into Your Profile>Settings>Notifications, and at the bottom of the Notification settings you will see a Status section and a button for "Manage Notifications". Here you can add individual users that you wish to get notification when they are Available or go Offline. Hope this helps!
Yet make it much leaner & user-fiendly by being possible to trigger it witha right mouse click on a particular contact directly, as in SfB.

I do not see that option
you can turn notifications on and off for a person so it pops up when they become available by clicking on the 3 dots next to their name in chat
When is it coming? Admin Alex said it was in internal testing in February 2019 !
This is very exciting, indeed. The status of the team members are constantly changing without reason. Obviously because of the usage of other programs, or it sets the status to away, when the user doesn't move the mouse for some minutes! If this will give a notification each time, this will be fun! Maybe it's better to fix this first.

We need this for federated organsations and external users not just internal contacts.. this was definitvely available in SFB and must have to work with customer and business contacts ;)
Any progress over the past 16 months? This is still a great missing feature in comparison with Skype... (it should be available via right-click on the contact from anywhere in Teams, not just in the chat list). Also the pop-up notification should offer the same options as in Skype, to ignore once (but remain active) or to turn off the alert entirely.

There are shortcomings as other have noted. Another shortcoming: The feature can't be used on external contacts.

@Alex @Microsoft - any chance we will see the removal of the limit of 15 contacts that can be added to notifications of status changes?

Go to the chat part and use the three points in front of the desired contact as in the attached picture. I only have it in french but the icon should look the same !
As per many below previous comments, I used this feature as needed to know when a colleague was available, as a one-off. I do NOT want to be told all day long when they are available each time they come off a call etc. I can't find anywhere how to turn this feature off again. Please help!!

Work-around to stop notifications for someone no longer in your chat history even if 'Settings' is disabled by your company:
1. In Contacts tab, create a new contact groups
2. Add the person to the group
3. Click on the ... by the contact and stop notifications
A LOT of clicks, but at least it does the job until MS implements the requested right-click method
Yay, it's coming. Would of been awesome during COVID-19 as i'm not sitting next to my colleagues. Then they can't avoid replying to a request to call me back when online.
is this feature still underdevlopment
