Tag for status updates
Skype for Business supports tagging for status updates. It's a really buried feature, but one that is really helpful when trying to get in touch with someone. Would love to make this more easily available in Microsoft Teams to be better able to catch people as they become available (e.g. know when they come in in the morning, when they finish their current meeting, etc.).
I’m excited to announce that this feature is in internal testing, and should be coming soon! Thanks!~ Alex
This is very exciting, indeed. The status of the team members are constantly changing without reason. Obviously because of the usage of other programs, or it sets the status to away, when the user doesn't move the mouse for some minutes! If this will give a notification each time, this will be fun! Maybe it's better to fix this first.

We need this for federated organsations and external users not just internal contacts.. this was definitvely available in SFB and must have to work with customer and business contacts ;)
Any progress over the past 16 months? This is still a great missing feature in comparison with Skype... (it should be available via right-click on the contact from anywhere in Teams, not just in the chat list). Also the pop-up notification should offer the same options as in Skype, to ignore once (but remain active) or to turn off the alert entirely.

There are shortcomings as other have noted. Another shortcoming: The feature can't be used on external contacts.

@Alex @Microsoft - any chance we will see the removal of the limit of 15 contacts that can be added to notifications of status changes?

Go to the chat part and use the three points in front of the desired contact as in the attached picture. I only have it in french but the icon should look the same !
As per many below previous comments, I used this feature as needed to know when a colleague was available, as a one-off. I do NOT want to be told all day long when they are available each time they come off a call etc. I can't find anywhere how to turn this feature off again. Please help!!

Work-around to stop notifications for someone no longer in your chat history even if 'Settings' is disabled by your company:
1. In Contacts tab, create a new contact groups
2. Add the person to the group
3. Click on the ... by the contact and stop notifications
A LOT of clicks, but at least it does the job until MS implements the requested right-click method
Yay, it's coming. Would of been awesome during COVID-19 as i'm not sitting next to my colleagues. Then they can't avoid replying to a request to call me back when online.
is this feature still underdevlopment

Is this feature available yet?

I just noticed that from a one-on-one chat you can select Notify when available. I kept looking on the person's Contact Card. This is very useful.
Agreed, this is such a step backwards from skype, this MS Teams is horrible...

This was simple on Skype for Business - a right click to add a person and a right click to remove. I don't need a permanent notification setting for a person; it's just a temporary notification so that I know when they are free in the next few hours. Going down multiple levels through Settings is time-consuming and unnecessary. Please add functionality to the "Chat" window or "Contacts" window so this can be done easily and quickly.
May I suggest implementing this as a POST of user presence/status to a particular Team & Channel they belong to? IE; status board
OMG. This is so badly done it deserves an Oscar mention.
Please please fix it to work like it did in Skype.

I tagged someone, and can't remember how, nor untag them...help?

This is so badly implemented. Having to click down 4 levels into settings, then search and add people is crazy. Such a step back from Skype where this was accessible and simple. I cannot fathom the thinking behind how this has been delivered.

Once you've tagged someone and they left company, and you no longer have the chat/thread listed on the left hand side in Teams it's IMPOSSIBLE to untag someone for status updates so everyday I'm getting information that this person is offline. Is there other way to do it? Or this is not possible?
