Editing a comment - cannot hit ENTER to skip to the next line.
When writing a new comment, I am able to use ENTER to skip to the next line. However, when I edit the same comment, I cannot use ENTER to skip to the next line. Please fix.

I agree also that the default of ENTER sending the message is a poor choice. I'm used on most messaging system (Twitter, Slack, GitHub issues...) to hit CTRL+ENTER for sending it, while I can format the way I want with ENTER.
Microsoft UX teams fail to impress again. Why is every single app plagued with little aggravating weirdnesses, and why does every MS product UX behave inconsistently between and within apps?

UPDATE: You can hit enter for new line/CRLF but what is interesting is that it only works with bullets and other adv editing. Add bullets and ENTER doesn't send the message. So they know how to do it, just not applied/available in the standard message window. Please add option to turn on or off "SEND WITH ENTER". Also should be able choose standard text window or adv text window and make default.

Joining the bandwagon - ENTER should not send messages! Very frustrating.
Issue raised more than 2 years ago. Everybody agree it is a VERY frustrating issue, and still it has not been fixed yet. Oh Microsoft Microsoft......
Would be great if the threads within a channel could be named/titled.

I think Teams chat is trying to mimic mobile messaging apps like Android Messenger. As others have stated, Shift+Enter or Tab+Enter (full Compose mode) are intended for longer messages. However, discoverability of these key combinations is poor. New users in particular get frustrated by this default behavior.
For these reasons, I agree with most here that Enter should never send by default. At the very least, this behavior should be globally configurable by owners/admins to make the user experience more consistent. In that case, this should also be user-configurable in case some users prefer a mobile messaging experience.
I've had my teams, along with my clients and partners all adopt Teams. This is one of the most frustrating things amongst others. Can Msft just fix this and stay consistent?
MS Outlook : Enter = CRLF, Shift+Enter = send
MS Teams: Enter = send, Shift+Enter = CRLF
WTF! Pressing Enter in Teams is the most frustrating thing about using this product.
Hit TAB and Enter to expand the compose box, then you can hit ENTER without sending!!
Note that if you are in the 'Format' mode (little 'A' and paintbrush icon), then simply hitting ENTER will NOT deliver comment but will add a linebreak.
When you expand the compose box, you can use CR and not send messages. :)
I agree with everyone else. CR should NOT send messages. It is super annoying and messages get send before they are finished.

I agree 100% with the comments below that having ENTER instantly send your message is a poor design decision; particularly given that there is a SEND button (the paper airplane icon) below that looks ideal to fill the role. It is somewhat ironic that hitting the ENTER key in this forum adds a return and doesn't post the comment...
Just to re-iterate what a couple of folks have said below...SHIFT + ENTER does add a return (skips to the next line) to a message.
Additionally, (and this is pretty cleverly hidden from view) using the keyboard shortcut SHIFT + CONTROL + X opens what they refer to as the expanded compose box. This box not only uses the convention that ENTER creates a return but also has a host of message formatting tools (e.g., font formatting, bullets/numbering, hyperlinks, code snippets).
In short, messaging functionality appears to be pretty extensive but the UI design decision-making is pretty poor.

It could be a profile setting for your preference (like LinkedIn messages) where you can define enter as a CR/LF or SEND.

Agree with everyone.
Chat is a multiline option.
"Enter" on its own should NEVER NEVER EVER commit the text, this is different to every other app I use.
Teams should be a seamless product not something I have to relearn.

Please use the same format you do other places (yammer, outlook) … Ctrl+Enter will submit/send/etc. ENTER should skip to the next line.
Agree this needs to be fixed. People start responding to the line of text I posted, before I finish composing the text. That's terrible.
SHIFT + ENTER = LINE BREAK
or: click the formatting "A" and just ENTER will work.
I like having the quick post option... now that I know how to insert a line break when I need to lol.
This is a HUGE pain in the @#$ !
