Ability to hide or minimize gifs (at user level)
I like a lot about Teams. However, one of the nice features of your main competitor is that on things like GIFs you can minimize them. GIFs are fun, but after the initial fun they are annoying to keep seeing auto playing in the feed. So a way to minimize them in the feed would be great.
This feature request is still being reviewed by the feature team.
Honestly this is probably one of the biggest gaps between Slack and Teams for adoption. Not being able to collapse the distracting .gifs while still allowing them from an admin perspective turns Teams from being a productivity enhancer with fun capabilities to a distraction.
As John Melendy has stated, we need the ability to hide/block/disable gifs for a particular channel and/or user.
Since gifs affect each user differently (some love them, others hate them), this should not solely be in the control of the admin of the teams application within the office, or the admin of a channel, but up to each user to turn on/off these possibly unwanted features, since they will not affect the usefulness of teams if they are disabled.
Personally my co-worker spams me with occasional gifs and it's annoying. Blocking him seems a bit too far since he's usually useful. The ability to disable gifs will at least put that feature back in my control; where it belonged to begin with.
E.g., Facebook allows you to hide or block certain types of posts/images without un-liking or unfriending a page/user entirely.

To clarify, the request is not for a global enable/disable flag for a channel, but for individual users to hide GIFs or disable auto-play of GIFs for a channel when the admin has decided to allow it globally. There does not appear to be an option for this. Currently either everyone has to see GIFs or no-one gets GIFs at all.

@Warren : Imagine you have a particular channel visible almost all the time, but it doesn't get many messages. Now imagine that someone sends a funny, animated gif to the channel. You see it and laugh, and then go back to what you are doing. Two hours later, the gif is still animating ... and you can't stop it. What once was funny is now tired and annoying.
Slack provides a command called /collapse, which hides the animation under a tree gui widget ... click a triangle, and see the funny animation again ... click the triangle again and the animation is hidden.
This feature is all about allowing fun things to be sent to a channel, but then allowing users to hide them after they become annoying.

No, i mean we would like the ability for users to hide specific images after they have been displayed in any channel.

The request is not to have the option to disable them. It is to have the ability to collapse a gif or image that you have seen and don't want to see again while you have Teams open on a different monitor or in a different tab.

Collapse might be a better word. We don't want to disallow them, but after we've seen them, they take up a lot of space in the chat, causing a lot of scrolling. If we could collapse them to a single line that says "View GIF >" or something like that, it would be better. Clicking on that line would expand it back to viewing the full GIF.
Warren, Slack also has the option to load the images expanded, and then collapse them after you have viewed them by using the /collapse command. Thanks.
Sorry, that's not what we're asking for Warren - we want the ability within channels to ALLOW members to post .gifs / images, but we don't want the image to load expanded. Check out how Slack has options to have .gifs and images minimized by default when they are posted - the user can then expand them if they choose.
Also, STOP PLAYING THEM after 15 seconds or so! Slack does this. Allow me to minimize all images too.
I would like to option to delete them from my view of the chat once I receive them.

there's not a lot i like about teams. Microsoft, please PLEASE allow us to minimize GIFs and disable link previews
Need a setting:
Default GIF behavior: Large Icon, Small Icon, Hidden
Also a small button to expand and hide each GIFs individually
Scott Yates commented
Yes please, just a little close or hide button for each gif would be great.
Yes, being able to view, then suppress gifs should be added.
When an animated GIF is in a channel or conversation for awhile can be distracting. Please allow users to hide or minimize any image or video in a chat or conversation.

I agree with this idea. I also have moments when gifs are being spammed that I wish I could hide or minimize them.
This would be a pretty nice edition. I have coworkers who like to spam me with gifs when they're bored, other chat tools like Flowdock allow me to hide these.
Oh yeah, Alasdair is the coworker I'm talking about incase you were wondering...
It's no fun if you can't spam your coworkers with gifs that they can't hide!
