Make "Follow this channel" the default setting.
Usual Microsoft lack of UI intuition.
Channels should be followed by default with the user unfollowing it if they wish.

Thank you for the feedback. Changing the default setting is under review by the feature team, and your feedback is very useful as they are evaluating.

We use this with our business and having a large workforce asking that everyone always follows all channels is very manual and updates are missed. if someone is added they need to get the updates as a default.

This is ridiculous. It isn't sensible default behavior and isn't intuitive for users. You're added to a channel and then you don't get notifications for it? I've got an office of people who aren't going to adopt this. I was on the fence between rolling out Slack and Teams, and every step of the way I feel like I made a mistake now not going with Slack.

is it possible to have the same type of notifications in Team Channel conversations like private chat conversations?

Totally agree with many of the other users. This is causing a problem with our adoption since the message of FOLLOW EVERY NEW CHANNEL simply doesn’t get received and, um, “followed”. Need to be able to follow everyone by default until the culture shifts and everyone “gets it”. Then we can shift more into an opt-in vs. opt-out mindset.

I’m not sure if auto-follow is the better for all channels (people may get annoyedabout having to repeatedly unfollow new niche channels) it would be great to let channel creators decide whether this should be an opt-in or an opt-out channel.

We should have the ability to have 'follow channel' enabled by default when creating a team and/or channel.
Same justification as others on this thread...
The biggest pain point in getting companies to shift to Teams is the lack of notifications and the feeling that people are 'missing out' on chats. I like the idea that people can 'unfollow' a channel, but not that following isn't enabled by default.
Every person in a team now needs to manually 'follow' a channel rather than them being automatically enrolled for following a channel when it is created, or a user added to a team. This should be an option for admins of the channel/team to choose what the default setting is. Either 'follow by default' or 'do not follow by default'.

I also like this idea. Thanks for reviewing it.

Even a Bot that could set people to follow a channel when they are added or joined would work for this.

As an Owner I should be able to initially force users to follow channels to ensure they receive all of the messages that are intended for them.
Acceptance Criteria:
+ Following can be enabled when a channel is created
+ Following can be enabled when a new user is created
+ Users are notified in the channel that they are following
+ Users can switch off enforced following but this should be displayed to Owner(s) -

I've had colleagues resent the switch to teams because "it doesn't tell me when there's new messages" This is the reason. They didn't understand they needed to follow each channel.

At-least give option while creating channel. that would make so much easy.

Would at least like to see this as an option upon creation. I have some that would be a required follow (can't even use teams until it's an option) and some that people could subscribe. At least if the admin could choose then it would help with adoption for those areas that do require following.

Definitely need better notifications or for channels to be followed by default.

I just started using Teams and the lack of default notifications coming from a channel on both desktop and mobile is a huge issue. Every other chat client (including Skype) has notifications on by default. Please enable notifications as the default for all channels.

Not sure if this is absolutely necessary. When we add a new channel - half the time for smaller groups of the team but still accessible to the whole team - the channel creator mentions the people that should follow it. If a channel is created with a whole team in mind, the creator mentions the whole team and instructs them to follow it as necessary. This method is less intrusive, but a little more effort is required to ensure the right people are following the channel.

Just the thing for transitioning a company to Teams, a chat client that doesn't notify you about chats. Maybe this is actually a productivity feature?
I can only assume the same idiot who decided we should only see 3 channels at a time is leading the charge on this one too.

This needs to be a settings when creating a team/channel.

In case this helps:
If you right click the Channel and select "Follow", it will raise a notification.
If the channel is important, you can also force the Channel to be available to be available to everyone.
Note that you can also use @mentions to explicitly call attention to a specific posting using the "@" sign followed by the name of the channel.

This is the biggest excuse from our users "We didn't see the notification, we were not alerted." We can't rely on the user to "Follow" every channel. We have over 30 channels.

This is a big pain point on having to rely on users to receive notifications.
