Open in Word/Excel/PowerPoint as Default
It would be great if Teams would have the ability to always launch the desktop app when opening Office documents as opposed to launching the online version.
Rest of teams is awesome.
Thank you for your feedback. We’re happy to announce this is now available to users who opt into Public Preview.
You can learn more about the Microsoft Teams Public Preview program here: https://aka.ms/TeamsPublicPreview, and Teams administrators can find documentation to manage which users will see the Public Preview option here: https://aka.ms/TeamsPublicPreviewAdmin

Need to make it simpler to choose to open a document in the desktop version of the app. I can get to it after opening it in the online version, but that is a very clunky UX. Would like to see something more like Sharepoint where I can override the default behavior easily from a menu.
I wrote this rather than up voting the suggestion to be able to change the default, because even with that, it is important to be able to override default behavior for the inevitable exception situations that arise.
There is actually a link that does this and it can gathered from either Web or App interfaces of Teams.
- Open the Team in either App or Web.
- Click the 3 dotted Ellipsis (...) next to the Team Name (not the Channel)
- Select 'Get Link to Team'
The format of the App link looks like this:
https://teams.microsoft.com/l/team/<TEAM ID>thread.skype/conversations?groupId=<GROUP ID>
So the 'https://teams.microsoft.com/l/team'; component will open the App
Whereas the format of the Web link looks like this:
https://teams.microsoft.com/_#/teamDashboard/<TEAM NAME>/<TEAM ID>thread.skype/td.members
So the 'https://teams.microsoft.com/_#'; component will open the Web
Hope it helps.
Please Please Please let us make the choice!!! this is painful as a new user!!!
Yes please. Just found this from Googling for this exact problem. Really annoying.

I concur. It seems point of having a desktop app is to have a single portal to handle all of the tasks associated with it. Our team has been found this issue to reduce productivity, cause some confusion, and create more work space clutter. Please create option to set default to the desktop app.
I never want to open the document in Teams, or in Office Online. I always want to use the native desktop program. Would be nice if there was a global setting so documents always opened in desktop applications.
Agree, we need Skype type experience to have to choose the web or client option.

Very much needed. This functionality is available for pc when using IE, but not on mac.
this happens to me about 20 times a day. No work-around to force an open in Teams either. grrr
Wish I could vote for this more than once. Super annoying!
Please include this in the Mac apps as well. Cannot edit directly in the desktop apps at all on a Mac.

We also should be able to turn off the message that says "We're opening document.docx in Word.
Feel free to keep using Microsoft Teams"
That just causes an extra click.
I agree. You have this functionality built correctly in the online version of OneDrive. You can select the office app online or local. Give us the ability to click the "..." and open online or on desktop.
I am currently using a mac, so sorry if this is already available for PC.

YES PLEASE !! Also for all the other applications (powerpoint, excel, ...)
As people already mentioned it would be awesome if there was a setting on user side where you could set default open to either online or desktop.
yep - it would be good to fix this - as when the link takes me to the browser I have to login to sharepoint again and then I get to answer the most annoying question in the universe (which I already get to answer multiple times every day) - "which account do you want to use - do you want to use your work or school account"
Agree, very frustrating
