Open in Word/Excel/PowerPoint as Default
It would be great if Teams would have the ability to always launch the desktop app when opening Office documents as opposed to launching the online version.
Rest of teams is awesome.
Thank you for your feedback. We’re happy to announce this is now available to users who opt into Public Preview.
You can learn more about the Microsoft Teams Public Preview program here: https://aka.ms/TeamsPublicPreview, and Teams administrators can find documentation to manage which users will see the Public Preview option here: https://aka.ms/TeamsPublicPreviewAdmin

Yes, this should be a user-editable setting to select the default way in which documents open.
This is desperately needed.
Stop making the user experience suck by forcing forgetful people (like myself) to open documents in Teams THEN have to reopen in the native app to actually do meaningful work on the file. There are so many features lacking in the teams versions of MS tools that they are completely worthless to me.
If you want to force people to use the feature limited built-in viewers, at least give me an option to change the default to open in native app for the MS tools.

My customers are needing this option to defaulty open Teams documents in App rather than web browser by default. They pay for the full apps, so it would be a great way to make sure everyone gets the same experiance and uses the same method of using documents. The web experiance view is not a complete one and some users don't know that they can use the load in app option. The option to default either method would be a big help.
Please define 'actively'
The feature team is actively working on this feature as well as doing work to give users the choice to open Word/Excel/PowerPoint files by default in Browser, Office app or inside the Teams app.

Sehr geehrte Entwickler
Effizientes Arbeiten geht nur wenn man die App als Defaultöffnungsvariante wählen kann! Bitte umsetzen.

Hello dear Microsoft developers,
we like to work with Teams, but it bothers most users (my colleagues) that there is no option to open files / applications automatically in the respective app and you don't have to press the right mouse button and explicitly give the command to open in app.
I could imagine that some users will like this.
But all in all I think Teams is a great application incl. all the features it is great for daily work!
Thanks for this and
It would be so helpful to be able to set opening in the app as default - especially in Excel.
I need the file not to change or change date whenever I just want to have a look at it.

I have gone down the rabbit hole of trying to understand how version numbers relate to feature updates in Teams. Basically - they don't. Teams features that are listed on the Release Notes page may or may not come to Teams at some indeterminate point in the future, and there's no way of telling when.

I'm on 1.4.00.14623 updated on 6/2/2021, release notes say it was shipped in Version 2105: May 24
Version 2105 (Build 14026.20246). Seems like I should have it, but I don't see it in Settings.
I desperately want to enable this feature!!!

Chris M-That would be great if it works. Im on 2103. Are you on 2105 release?

The release notes for version Version 2105 (Build 14026.20246) say this
"User preference setting to open files by default in Desktop (or) Browser (or) Teams: Users can set their default preference as Browser, Desktop or Teams when opening Office (Word, Excel, and Power Point) files that are shared in Teams.Desktop setting can be selected if latest Office clients are installed and activated"
I don't see the option though, has anyone got this working?

Why did you guys remove it in the first place?

Most "Completed" items from Teams Uservoice took 3-4 years. Some shorter so it really makes me wonder if it will really happen since it has been OVER 4 years since the idea was posted!
I can't even fathom what the use case of opening it in Teams over the real app could be. It just blocks Teams from being used, while trying to work on a document with almost zero functionality of the editor.
please add it back, it is very time consuming to click two times everytime when i need to open a file!
This adds two clicks to any file opening activity within teams. Two clicks multiplied by 100 times per day is a lot of wasted time and effort- and is annoying as all ****.

A feature desperately asked in my tenant.
I had that option about a month ago, and now it's gone again :-(
Please put it back, really annoying that it doesn't work anymore.
