Increase duration for desktop notifications
The channel/team on which the notification has been made should stay more/better/longer visible so that you won't miss one.
With the rollout of support for native Windows 10 OS native notifications, you are able to increase banner duration from 5 seconds all the way to 5 minutes. Native Mac notifications are in the process of rolling out, and once you have that build, you can also do the same for Mac notifications. (see https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/17679433-persistent-notification)

We started testing Teams in our small network group and I cannot stand the lack of good notifications, it's like the same way the new Skype works which also is terrible. I need to be able to have the option to make popup notifications that stay and blink in my taskbar like the old Skype (pre version 8) does. I miss so many new chats in Teams due to me not noticing simply by seeing the new chats were bolded.

I am reading comments about small numbers and/or subtle color changes in the Teams icon when you have notifications/activity pending. I don't see any of that.

My ask in this regard is simple. If I have ANY "activity" pending, the Teams Icon in the Notification Tray should indicate that. I want to be able to leave my desk, come back, and instantly know if anything in Teams requires my attention...without having to open the Teams app or scan my e-mail or be forced to turn on mobile notifications to get pinged about every little thing.

I always miss new messages because the notification is not visible enough. The only indicator of a new message is the little number on the icon in the task bar. At least let the task bar icon highlight orange or show a toast in the notification tray.

If I could set up a unread notification for specific channels I'm concerned with, that would be great.
Right now if I'm in a chat with someone I get zero indication that anything is going on in a Teams discussion unless I'm mentioned. This is hard to contend with when team discussions aren't super-frequent and you're not in the Teams pane all that often.
Ideally I'd like to see a selector option for "Show unread count badge in sidebar when the following Teams have discussion" AND/OR an option to toggle unread notifications on the sidebar for individual channels. (It needs to be a per-team selector though because there are lots of different silos/teams in the company that are irrelevant to various people.)

I agree about the notifications. My team is doing a test run for Teams and this is what I noticed and heard back. Even the e-mail notifications are hit and miss, and there's only the subtle color change on the taskbar to notify when a new message is posted. This needs an e-mail/Skype type of pop-up window where you immediately see a new message is posted.

I keep missing messages. Please let us add custom notification sounds/adjust volume.
Microsoft really needs to hurry up and do what they do best: Steal better features from better developers.
This is embarrassing. I have actually been pushing for Teams because of the other features like file share and collaboration, but my users are constantly complaining that they are missing important messages.
Come on, Microsoft. Just buy Hipchat or ICQ or SOMETHING and roll it into Teams to fix this.
I do not have any issues with receiving notifications. I actually want the ability to turn off notifications when the team is @mentioned in a general team chat.
However, I do have an issue when working with an external monitor - I miss the notification from my laptop's primary screen.

We need more options for notifications, including an obvious permanent indicator in the taskbar. "No options" is not an option.
Multiple complaints from coworkers globally who easily miss chats. The minimized Teams program should blink at best when there is an unread response.
I didn't even know the text was slightly bolder for new chats, I have been looking hard and for a tiny dot next to chats that have new messages. I say get rid of the status circle on the chat icons and use that as a visual for new messages like APPLE APPS and their red notification number. COPY WHAT ALREADY WORKS!!!!!
The lack of basic notifications makes Teams nearly useless. Please take a look at how slack does its notifications. Both the desktop and mobile applications are sorely lacking basic features. I should be able to customize my notifications preferences individually.
When the app is open but in the background, a 1 on 1 chat conversation does not result in a notifier. We are @ posting all over the place and still folks aren't seeing notifications. Sometimes emails come in saying I am mentioned. sometimes not...
Absolute frustration especially since its such a common place thing. Seriously MSFT, you can't figure this out???? How long you getting let such massive gap exist over a basic feature?
I get complaints from my team all the time (multiple times per day) that they didn't see the notification. The biggest issue seems to be missed chat messages for the contact that you talked to last. Even with the application minimized, it assumes that you have seen the message when you probably have not (and no badge is displayed - it should also flash or something when chats are added or the badge changes). I can't remember how skype works, but I never received complaints from my team while we were using Skype. I really hope this gets the attention it deserves soon.
As others have pointed out, this has only recently gotten far worse. I just flat out won't get any sort of alert when I get a message.
This needs to be a major priority. It looks like recently there was a change that if you leave Chatwindow X open, and open a window over the top of teams (Burying it) you no longer get notifications.
I can't justify rolling this out to the wider business when i'm getting complaints internally within our dept that people are missing important IM's
yes, on skype for biz, its very noticeable. and we actually also use skype non biz for some off shore, and teams is supposed to help us replace having 3 messengers, but until this is fixed & we are able to force SOME notifications, we can't eliminate those legacy work flows with mixed credential apps.
What is the use of a messenger, which does not show notifications?
I have missed many messages, including from my supervisor. This does not look good. Any idea on when this will be fixed?
Our company just moved from Skype for Business to Teams, and it appears that sounds and banners do not occur when the Teams window is open to a chat with the sending user but Teams is not the active window. Therefore, replies and follow-ups are constantly being missed, an issue that didn't occur with Skype. Please update the banner and sound notifications so that they occur anytime the Teams window is not the active one! In addition, please add blinking to the taskbar icon as we had with Skype so that the notifications aren't as easily missed, and allow the banner to linger longer. Otherwise, we actually LOSE productivity because we constantly have to click back into Teams to see if someone replied (or we miss communications entirely, which is the opposite of what we were aiming for by moving to Teams).
