I really like Teams. I do. But the current chat layout is not suited for professional chats. It's way to space consuming. It looks like something imported from MSN with smiley's that take half of the screen. I would say that Slack have nailed it because they focused on the ability keeping a tight window with lots of chat text visible. In Teams the window is full and starts scrolling after like 10 sentences.
We are working on a design with more density in mind. Until this design is solidified we are putting this item back to Under Review.
Will you bloody fix it. It doesn't need to be right the first time. Do it in increments: remove all the unused space. Remove the 1 "reply" button per message. Then look at the next peeves.
this is going on for nearly a year, studies, focus groups etc. but nothing has transpired yet. Really?
When can we expect some movement on this. It has been on your radar since March. Soon needs to be turned into a date. Please give the people what they want or we will be stuck using Slack forever.
In my opinion this is one of the most confusing and ugly app layouts I've even seen. Our company is being pushed to switch from Slack. Teams is just painful to look at.
I'm sure the integration with other Office 365 applications will turn out to be better than Slack, but Teams is just an awful, awful interface.
Please hire a U/X designer. Here's a tip: more like Slack.
White user interface, clearer navigation column, more differentiation between conversations and replies, better fonts.
And get rid of the creepy, mustachioed dude with angry eyebrows peeking through the "Open the FAQ" circle on every "General" channel. Seriously, it's weird and unsettling.

I would like to add that we have a number of feeds coming into our teams channel and these take up way too much real estate. We're lucky if we can see three on the screen. We just need to know that something has arrived as opposed to all the detail.

The Teams UI is awful. Please get something more compact out even if it isn't fully finished.
also support, " leave voice message".
Just get it done. The current UI is pretty bad. Software engineering 101, keep it simple and stupid.

Ben, you are not alone. I follow 5+ topics on here that get almost daily posts (laments) now. I once had hope. Now, just searing bitterness. I wish I knew a tech insider tipster or something. I'd love for this massive failure to make the headlines on Ars or something.
Every time I open Slack for any reason I openly weep at how much simpler and beautiful online collaboration used to be and curse being trapped in this prison of awkward spacing and weird thread replies. Days have turned to weeks, to months and nothing ever changes. I look out the window and see birds fly in the sky and am reminded of the freedom that is not mine. My joy at seeing their freedom turns to bitter pain and misery as I realize I can still not chat with someone in this tool without switching between meta tabs and that I have to scroll until my joints ache in order to see what is happening in a conversation. I am fettered to the earth with the chains of broken promises made by Microsoft usability groups. They tell me things will be better soon. They lie. Nothing has any meaning anymore. Please fix.
The current Teams UI is not user or conversation friendly. Having to switch back and forth between chats and teams is counterproductive. I know you have just go a copy the Slack UI, but they really had it right with their navigation bar;
Subscribed channels at the top
Direct Messages at the bottom
Even the channel layout in Teams is cumbersome, you show the team and then the channels, but if a team has one channel, since you currently cannot create private channels within a team you have these gawdly drop downs. Honestly the navaigation should be:
Team - Channel and that is all you see not:
This is basically a joke at this point. No updates or ETA, just soon from >1 month ago. I'm sure (hopefully) it's because they're ironing out the details, but we need some kind of update..
Please include a compact view or zoomed out view that allows for viewing more content at a time as well as a lower level of padding.

Please define "soon" since it's been over a month since you said it was coming and nearly a year before this obvious deficiency was identified.
Also personally "Gutters reduced" should read - Gutters eliminated.

hi is this still in development or rolled out?
is it possible to modify layout via stylesheets/skins?
would be interesting on a more condensed look

Absolutely, if we are to replace S4B with T then we need them to be similarly lightweight when we need them to be.
