I really like Teams. I do. But the current chat layout is not suited for professional chats. It's way to space consuming. It looks like something imported from MSN with smiley's that take half of the screen. I would say that Slack have nailed it because they focused on the ability keeping a tight window with lots of chat text visible. In Teams the window is full and starts scrolling after like 10 sentences.
We are working on a design with more density in mind. Until this design is solidified we are putting this item back to Under Review.

Pretty sick of Teams for chat and making calls. Love my S4B and the compactness on the screen. Tired of seeing very old chats when I bring up someone. I know teams is the future, but it's a step backward in efficiency. Even having 2 or 3 screens, the app is just to cumbersome. Great for multiple video calls, but most of my chatting is quick hitting and I want to see who is available in a list not every contact card. Give us compact, short and sweet to the point as an option. Just too much resizing and scrolling around to find what I want.
To further this it would be awesome if I could see my left bar functionality together. So teams channels can be in the same sidebar as chats. I find that many users often resort to making ad hoc group chat messages when the conversation really belongs in a team subject channel. But everyone is just working in the chat field so they just make a new chat. I believe if teams and chat menus could be in the same sidebar menu it would help. (slack does this)
How much more time, for a redesign of the app UI? C'mon Microsoft you can do better than this!
At least just comment a bit on how the progress is going. Is there already something at least for a feedback?

Teams needs a bare-bones user interface mode with very compact layout and most of the colors and fancy shapes disabled.
It should not look a kids app for 3 to 5 year olds for a cartoon show.
Actively ignoring this request since December 2016! Is this a record yet?
This is a big reason why our group is sticking with Slack. We endure Teams when forced.
The reason I enjoy the Slack UX more than Teams is largely because of this.
Very bad UI design for a modern communications app. Takes up WAY too much screen space. Can't even change Speed dial to list view and it forces two rows of cards... horrible interface!!!
Bad outcome of design for mobile first and then make larger screens have a second class citizen experience.
Separate but equal did not work before and does not work for apps.
Skype for Business had a very good slim chat window. Take a look at your own product.
Remove the headshots from messages
Remove icons from messages
Remove white space
Remove all of the fancy fonts
I should be able to see 40 or more lines of text on the screen at a time on a desktop, 20 lines on a phone, 40 lines on a tablet.
Remove all the empty space. Left align the messages instead of having them in the middle with lots of empty space to the left and right.

I agree with the OP
On my laptop I can see 5, maybe 6 messages in Teams. Slack and Riot I can see twice to three times that number.
Teams has lots of great options and capabilities, but I will never be able to convince our company to use it as a primary communication tool with a UI that makes such inefficient use of space.
Why on earth is the title bar of the teams window 2-4 times the size of a "normal" application? On my 27" WUXGA Monitor the title bar is 1,5cm high!!!!!!
please elevate this request
What an absolute joke. This issue is from 2016.
We can now pop out a chat, however for some bizarre reason, the window has a FIXED minumum size. We should be able to scale down the window size to be horizontally and vertically thin (if we want to).
If UI elements within the window (eg on a popout chat window) scaled down responsively, that would be even better.
UI/UX with slow interactions in Teams should be a top priority for Microsoft. Once it's done right Slack will have no chance.
