I really like Teams. I do. But the current chat layout is not suited for professional chats. It's way to space consuming. It looks like something imported from MSN with smiley's that take half of the screen. I would say that Slack have nailed it because they focused on the ability keeping a tight window with lots of chat text visible. In Teams the window is full and starts scrolling after like 10 sentences.
We’re currently working on defining a compact mode experience. I will post more details when we have more to share.
Seems off. Why not just provide 1 of x improvement incrementally, could be wrong in timing but In 10 months could not provide 1 improvement? That is (for me) a source of frustration and belief that no one is actually listening or doing anything. The crazy thing about is is there seems (at least by this thread) a large customer base that just wants to use teams and to pay for it; but for some reasons actively be prevented from using it. Can it really take 6 months to resize the gutters for example? Maybe it does
Still can't read more than 3-4 lines on screen at a time, even less if there are any hyperlinks or threaded discussions.
Every demo I've seen with Teams uses it fullscreen and it's still a bloated mess.
I've already allocated a third of my screen to teams and it won't ever get any more real estate from me.
Same frustrations as many others; company O365 licenses forced an incomplete and inferior product down our throats.
I assume the delay is due to the UI team having difficulty directly copying Slack's layout in it's entirety.
If it looks anything but, please let us know you have failed and your ETA on a complete rewrite.
Most have been forced over due to O365 intergration, when clearly Slack is superior product.
This is pathetic.
There is a lot of wasted space on the desktop application when the window is scaled down to its smallest size. I want to run it in that smaller size so it can run in the corner of one display but still show my middle pane that shows conversations and teams depending on the context selected in the far left. Having those panes as slide out drawers with no option to pin is frustrating when there is so much unused space on the sides of the chat entries and text box.
The padding on the right is far too much. In full-screen (desktop app), the chat text-boxes don't extend over enough (creating excessive white-space), and when reduced down it turns out there is a minimum 20% padding. A static amount of probably 20px would be more sensible.
Once the window is too narrow the "team selector" panel disappears. Give ALL users this toggle, as many users will rarely need to leave "General" channel anyway so again, be respectful to them and don't waste their screen space

I am surprised the glaring failure here hasn't made the news yet. Anyone know how to get this tragedy in front of a tipster at one of the tech media sites? I don't think I've ever seen a product by any company get so few updates or changes across so many critical and demanded user feature requests. Its like someone put a prototype in to production and an intern accidentally deleted all the source code and ...
Seriously, is anyone listening??
Still nothing....This is nuts

When can we expect to see the changes mentioned by Gino?
Hi, is the compact layout available now? If so how do I use it?
Please apply the compact layout also to connectors/cards. For example when someone comments on a Jira issue or a Github pull request in Slack I see the comment right away without all the clutter. In teams I see a huge card that takes up the entire chat. And worse, it doesn't even show the comment until you click "see more". Please only display the most relevant field first and hide the rest (profile picture etc.). Keep in mind we use this tool to be productive, not because it looks nice.

Then I'll add comment instead of new Idea: "I need Theme to make everything smaller on screen - I have 7 teams with channels and I can't see it all at once anymore"
Big buttons are still needed for non-IT people who will use one team and few channels probably.

I would agree that the layout is not very optimized. I like the layout in general, but the chat window is not well laid out. I dont like comparing but look at how much text fits in Slack compared to Teams - I think you have to much space in between each message that makes each message take up to much real estate
Also this part I think is huge - you cannot adjust the sidebar width this would be a huge help as I dont normally need so much space for my channels
Still see nothing, again when is soon. 6 months from now, in next 3 months?

The chat pane is great, the users list is very large due to the user icons. Please allow us to suppress these and vertically compress the chat list. I think Skype for Business offers this feature already

When is this coming? Teams UI is the ugliest and worst I have ever seen. The text is usually unreadable because of different fonts in messages and in a normal window like 2 messages are visible.
Just make a copy of Slack!!! Don't try to be creative, because you don't have the skills. Only people that are using teams are the ones that are forced to due to already having an Office 365 license.

I leave Skype open and running on my desktop. It is compact and informative. Teams on the other hand is designed to run full screen. A compact version like Skype offers is much preferred.
Bring it! We've "spent months" on user adoption and we are losing momentum without these improvements.
" We spent months testing designs with users, reiterating concepts, and reading through your feedback, to make sure we could meet as many of your common needs as we could."
All you had to do was re-create Slack's compact layout....
"Soon" - Can we get a slightly better guestimate for ETA. Also how will we know it has been applied - I'm hoping the changes will be fairly major so pretty obvious.
