I really like Teams. I do. But the current chat layout is not suited for professional chats. It's way to space consuming. It looks like something imported from MSN with smiley's that take half of the screen. I would say that Slack have nailed it because they focused on the ability keeping a tight window with lots of chat text visible. In Teams the window is full and starts scrolling after like 10 sentences.
We are working on a design with more density in mind. Until this design is solidified we are putting this item back to Under Review.
Skype use to group all our individual text conversations in one window where we could see if somebody has mentioned something. having to have ten individual windows open clutter up the screen is a real P.I.T.A. Can we get teams to do the same thing.
Being forced to switch to Teams from SFB is causing major complaints from our 1700 users. The screen space is crazy. We need the option for a "mini mode" or something similar where it's just a chat list with pop-out windows. Not being able to just keep a small Skype window on top during the workday, and instead open a full screen app that is wasting half of the available screen space is taking us backwards in productivity.
This is unbelievable. How can this be under review still after being almost done about 2 years ago was it not. Was it about that long @Sean Ellis?

Agreed. Please note this is not a "nice to have" but a major usability improvement.

I need the popout windows and the normal windows to be able to tile on a 1920x1080 and 1080x1920 resolution. I use monitors in portrait mode and the popout windows overlap.

Yes please. A compact lay out. Old ***** like myself need quite large fonts in order to read, and use only one monitor. So - please: a compact design so that MS teams can co-exist with other programs. After all - Microsoft make Windows (plural).
Please expedite this function. Since SKYPE is being discontinued organizations are forced to move to Teams to replace the simple chat function. SKYPE chat experience was ideal with the simple contact list and separate chat windows popping out. Please add this function to Teams for masses who are using this tool for chat only.
we beg you please make teams more lighter i use ut for school and i have a very low end computer i just cant do anything else i mean i cant run anyother program other than teams
it literally lags my computer for 10 seconds when i try to turn on my webcam

1274 days since you first said you were working on it.
599 days since you said you weren't working on it any more.
174 days since you said it was under review.
2 days it took people here to implement it.
Teams is lagging out my laptop most of the time I use it.. its eating my CPU and Memory.. only thing I use it for is chat
We are switching from SKYPE to Teams and I find the inability to not close chats a bit unnerving...

in the meantime, i would use "Zoon Out" Ctrl + -, to minimize view to make it compact enough
Can we get an update on this feature or at least an idea on what's being implemented/reviewed? It has been really a long time to get any friction on this.
Good news is that after moving to slack waiting for this, slack allows you to change the width of the left nav and right side bar. That only took them 4 years, but at least they did it.
I still cannot believe absolutely not a single thing has been done on this.
3,5 years and always (until very recently) in the top 5 of asks and we haven't gotten anywhere?!? Please, pretty please, we have to improve to be able to make better use of Teams as the first thing everybody sees is the chat UI and it's not good.

Haven't checked this for a year. I can't believe this hasn't been implemented yet after 3.5 years of feedback. Unreal. We are still using slack waiting for this nonsense. STILL WAITING X 3000
Can Compact List in Teams be made:
- and option which, once chosen, will stick and not be forgotten every session,
- a selectable default for all channels.

The UI becomes a bit more practical with one stop of zooming out (to 85%). Ctrl+[-]
Still, I'd love a return to more data dense apps. For something that I--and I suspect most people--are using on a monitor for at least 5 hours per day, the white-space is a waste.
THOMAS VARGHESE commented
The left sidebar is taking too much space for no reason, within the Chat window there is a huge margin before the conversations.
Hope they adopt how SKYPE is quite linear in this feature
