Have a Team use ONE OneNote *BUT* make all channels use a section group and also support creating sections within that section group.
Then the overall onenote would be semi-organised and also making the channels having the opportunity to group and extend note taking more freely.
The feature team has declined this request due to the fact that a similar experience already exists.
You can achieve very similar functionality with the existing integration. The OneNote integration has been redesigned so that you can add an entire notebook as a channel tab, but always show a particular section (be it new or existing). Within each tab, you can also create other sections as well as pages within any section to better organize your notes.

It's only clutter, if you use the Notebook only via/for/through Teams.
If you manually put sections (groups) to the notebook it makes it look overflowed quite quickly.
We organise all out notebook:
On the first level, there is no single section, you only see section groups. Inside of these section groups you start to put the sections. This keeps it organised and clear
I voted but in thinking about it you can add multiple one notes to a single channel. If you open the full one note for the team it will show "channel name" - "name of section". I still think being able to break it down from a group could add a lot of functionality however.

I would rather have OneNote create a Section group for each channel rather than just a section. Having a single section for each channel is rather limiting on further organizing the channel.
You can add them when you 'edit in OneNote' but they are not visible in Teams.
This approach would allow you to easily navigate through a team's OneNote Notebook, from the OneNote Application, but still keep channel notes a bit separate. This is much better than having separate notebooks for each channel. If a team has a decent number of channels, this could get super confusing to have a full notebook for each channel.
At the moment, you can only see the 'default' OneNote section and the pages underneath.
Sections are a core component to OneNote and therefore should be visible in the Teams view for OneNote.

Disagree. I think the current way it works (a section per channel) is fine. Actually I'll go further, I think the current way is the correct way, a section group per channel is unnecessary clutter.

Agree. Our workaround right now is to create a new OneNote Notebook in the root directory of each Teams channel we want this functionality in. The downside is you cannot edit or see the notes in Teams. You have to click the ellipses next to the OneNote file and open in OneNote or OneNote Online. Hopefully OneNote will be greatly improved in Teams and we can move the sections/subsections to a main single OneNote Notebook
I also dislike Teams creating a flat structure of sections per-channel in the root of the notebook, which creates a lot of clutter. However, moving the Team OneNote sections into a Section Group breaks functionality in Teams.
Renaming the channel should also rename the OneNote section

At the moment, creating a channel in the Team results in the creation of a Folder in the underlying Group Document library with the name of the channel. This is good. However, it also creates a section in the OneNote notebook with the channel name appended by _Notes. This is suboptimal - whay can't the Section name be the same as the channel name? Renaming it in OneNote also causes the connection to break. Can we get better control around artifact naming?
