Have a Team use ONE OneNote *BUT* make all channels use a section group and also support creating sections within that section group.
Then the overall onenote would be semi-organised and also making the channels having the opportunity to group and extend note taking more freely.
The feature team has declined this request due to the fact that a similar experience already exists.
You can achieve very similar functionality with the existing integration. The OneNote integration has been redesigned so that you can add an entire notebook as a channel tab, but always show a particular section (be it new or existing). Within each tab, you can also create other sections as well as pages within any section to better organize your notes.
Thank you for your feedback and suggestions.

Here's my problem with "a similar experience already exists"...
It sacrifices the experience in OneNote in order to simplify the implementation in Teams. It may well be simpler to allow for a notebook to be created in each Channel, but if I have 15 channels in my Team, then that means that if I'm on a mobile device then I have to handle 15 notebooks in OneNote. Surely for the user that's way to granular?
I respectfully suggest that the "best" organisational mapping remains team=notebook / channel=section group? Then inside the channel, that allows for flexibility in the separation of information using sections and pages, without creating a lot of clutter for a user who may only be looking to refer to this information through the OneNote application.
I do hope that the dev team reconsiders this request.

I cannot see how to do this without Section Groups.
What is the similar experience to give us this feature?
I have also notice there are a number of separate requests for this functionality in other suggestions.
Can they all be aggregated into a single idea, then it may be reconsidered and not declined.
I'm not seeing the OneNote Bot in our environment. Is it possible that we can be added to the preview/alpha testing? I have a few people that could help provide useful feedback if needed.

Not sure if this applies but on our team, I have a separate group for some specific testing. Same members but with the current setup, two separate notebooks. Having one with a separate section would be ideal. Or better yet, have separate channels within a team with a shared notebook.
The team channel should have the ability to see all sections of the Onenote, not just the original one. We use Onenote to take notes for our team meeting and have grouped them into sections by year etc.

I completely second this request. Section groups for each channel would be huge and would give the needed flexibility to get things done. Having multiple notebooks for the same team is a little unwieldy. Thanks for working on the OneNote integration!

The variation I'm looking for is to be able to have the Tab link/goto a specific section or page in the Notebook, rather the "top" of the notebook. This would allow me to link a tab to the channel specific section or page, or add multiple OneNote tabs that each go (default) to a specific section/page.

Actually, having ONLY the section for the OneNote tab is a benefit in Teams. It helps to keep it simplified. One channel = one Section. you can all all the pages needed. you can also add many OneNote tabs to a single channel.

I too would like to be able to have multiple sections per channel

I seem to be limited to only having One Section per channel. I'd like to see to be able to multiple sections per channel
maybe this could be merged:
request is about having a section group per channel
you currently need to work the other way around: create a tab on teams first, then a section is created in OneNote which in turns can be worked on and all pages are synced back to Teams
I strongly support this request. Not only is the view in OneNote really cluttered, if there are several channels with all several OneNote Tabs. So having section groups for the channels would make it much clearer and easier to work with this Team Notebook directly on OneNote.
I understand that might not work for everyone, so maybe this could be made configurable on tenant level how OneNote Tabs should be created.
Also I find the naming convention "fullChannelName - Tab Name" is rather lengthy and the resulting sections in OneNote are hard to work with (usually for me the tab name itself is being cut off).
a possible (manual) workaround for all the others here to share:
I found that once you create a OneNote tab and have it synced in OneNote, you can manually create a section group (use the channel name for example). Then you can move the auto-created sections to these section groups and you can even rename them!
So I have section groups per channel and the sections are shortened to only be the tab name. Syncing still works between OneNote and Teams, as the linking is done based on some ID/GUID I would guess.

We use Onenote a lot for our project and specific Department functions. Each has it's own sections which again has many pages.
Creating a department TEAM with a channel for each function or project uses up the Section in Onenote. we're latterly left with only pages per channel, which doesn't work for us.
I therefore support the section within section for Onenote on TEAMS.

I sort of like OneNote and use it a lot. My biggest frustration with it is the design into sections and pages leaves only two levels of hierarchy - section groups don't really add a level, since there's no content at that level. By deliberately removing the sections level of hierarchy, you're left with only one level. Especially frustrating if you started your organization wrong, and what you now have as a channel should really be at the team level - with no way to promote it to one.
I've taken to largely ignoring the Teams Notebook feature, and just creating a freestanding Notebook in OneDrive.
So my vote would be either adding the capability of a channel notebook as a channel tab, or at least as others suggested adding the ability to create a section group as another option for a channel tab.
I am befuddled that the tutorial site says "work in OneNote as you like" but my Section Groups are not visible. This isn't useable to me as I already have rich notebooks set up. Onenote needs to work on sticking with the same nomenclature so that it stops conflating tabs with notebooks.

I agree that there should be a Section Group created for each Channel in a Team OneNote. Having just one section is very limiting. It would also be nice if members of the Team that are not members of a Channel, have view rights in all OneNote sections that they are not a part of.
This is critical, otherwise what is the point of even having OneNote inside Teams.
The snag with adding many OneNotes to a Channel is the OneNote itself gets cluttered with with them and all the other channels. Dropping into a OneNote Section Group would be a great answer.
Alternative implementation? Enable editing the OneNote link in the tab.
saying this: I totally 'd like to see a section group per channel!!!!!!
