Let me @ Mention the user's first name instead of their DisplayName
Hi,
When mentioning someone with @, is it possible to use the user alias instead of the Display Name? In Slack for example, it is possible to choose whether to display the full name or the user name when being mentioned. Could be great to have it on MS Teams because it is shorter in messages where many mentions are provided.

Hello,
Please note that you can delete the name to keep only the firstname if you like (as you do in FB). -

I’m very new to Teams. While receiving my training (2 hours ago) I took umbrage to being referred to as @surname,firstname. I appreciate that this is set in AD but it is my choice how I am referred to. I am surprised that this is not a default option.

It is so unfreindly when you @Mention someone and it puts in Surname, Firstname
Hi @Smith, John how are you today! Makes it so over formal and unattractive. Should be able to choose to use the given name and or a nickname etc. defined in contacts or from the user themself

Great idea! Also as some other comments have mentioned, it would be nice to use peoples' nicknames or short names, preferred names.

<Lastname, Firstname> is very impersonal. not friendly

Is there an implementation of displaying name in
<first name> <lastname> format .Can it will be configured by the user itself in which format he wants to display .? -

I think this is fixed! I just typed an @mention in Teams, and selected the person when his information appeared, at which point it appeared as Lastname, Firstname MI. Then I clicked before Firstname and the cursor moved there, and I backspaced to take out Lastname, and the cursor moved back to the end of the name automatically, and I backspaced to remove the MI, then I was left with only Firstname, with the link active.

Just another upvote for creating an option to set an alias for the user inside the Teams app.

The problem for us is that we set up AD accounts with Mr. (Fname) and then Last Name. So all our teachers are Mr/Ms.Lastname. Doesn't work all that well in teams.

One more vote for use of alias. It seems weirdly impersonal to use full names, even if you can remove the last name. e.g. If I want to add a mention to Jess, it's seems strange to call her Jessica, when no one uses her full name.

please consider this submission as part of this request, https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/32693563-1-allow-me-to-refer-to-group-members-with-their-f
The fact that Teams is drawing from the company-defined GAL and using the Display Name field (where I work the Corp IT team has elected to use the Lastname, Firstname methodology, which is awful UX within Teams) needs rethinking. If the Teams product can override this and always ensure "Firstname Lastname", it will provide a much more personalized (i.e., normal human) experience over "Lastname, Firstname".

Upvoted! Just started trialing MS Teams today and this is the first thing that annoyed me. I've not read all the comments and suggestions but any improvement over always displaying the full name would be an improvement and I am sure there are a lot of good suggestions for how to go about it. Using the backspace method is not too bad for us as our AD is configured First Name first but would prefer it if the default could be configured to use First Name only by default and only use Fullname by default if more than one user in the team shares a first name. I believe that is similar to how Skype currently works.

Create an option to set an alias for the user inside the Teams app.

A key feature, brought up here in nov of 2016 and probably other places prior to that, yet here we are enjoying 2019 while still being fully annoyed by this lack of functionality.

Email notifications in Planner uses first name attribute from AAD, what is great. For Teams it is first word from Display Name attribute (what is often very uncomfortable and ugly in large global companies). Pls align Teams notifications with Planner's approach. Thx

Upvoted! This is a great feature request. I'm lazy so having to backpaddle each time @ autofills display name is taking several seconds as I abuse the @ for visibility.
Please implement this or something similar. (:
