More status options, custom status, and Out of Office
I like the status options in S4B, and so does my boss. It will be important to my boss before accepting the use of MS Teams widely to have a broader range of statuses. Missing statuses are:
* In a meeting
* In a conference call
* In a call
* Be right back
* Off Work
Particularly of importance are "Be right back" and "off work". "Do not disturb" is probably sufficient for "in a meeting", "in a call" and "presenting". But, it sure is nice that S4B auto-detects those three statuses (for the most part).
Would like to create a custom status option, such as an out-of-office message.
This request is still queued within our backlog. No new details yet.
Looks like the status option is showing up now. Select your username and you can update the status and the nice thing is you can set it for a timed period. No documentation on how to update this with an api though. Not sure how you see someone elses status though
when will the status message be available for android/iOS?
How is this this not an option yet? This has got to be the easiest option to add into Teams.

One other note: Slack displays your custom status emoji next to your name in chat, and in the user list, along with the colored dot for your online/offline status. Maybe that's the best of both worlds, especially since Teams can set you away or offline automatically based on your usage of the app and your device.

Custom statuses are implemented as of version 1.2.00.1758 (current version is 1.2.00.1761), but they're not that useful. The custom status you enter is only shown if you hover over a user's avatar. Instead, we need a replacement of the green checkmark, red busy, yellow clock, etc. that overlays the user avatar. We should be able to see someone's actual status with a quick glance.
This becomes especially important for those of us who work from home sometimes. If someone is looking for me in the office and they see a green checkmark because I'm "available", they're confused when they can't find me because I'm "available" from home. Also, what if I run out for lunch quick? Or have a meeting?
Slack implements this incredibly well, have a look for inspiration.

Now rolled out in v1.2.00.1758 (confirmed as of Feb. 5, 2019).
As a follow-up, it would be nice to have an option to Reset the status into one of the dropdown option after the time expires.
Are there any updates to this request. I am still seeing end users looking for the ability to customize their status messages as we had in Skype for Business.
BRUH! I AM NO LONGER ABLE TO PUT A WITTY QUOTE IN MY STATUS FIELD? THAT IS SO NOT CHILL. POSSIBLY THE LEAST CHILL THING TO HAPPEN AT WORK SINCE ADOPTING TEAMS.
Yes a custom status would be very helpful. I got use the feature in Skype and now can't not inform team members of what I would be working on at that point in time.
Any updates on this yet? This is a crucial piece we are missing from vs S4B.
How is this not already implemented? It's almost as if team chat applications are a new thing.

you should be able to free hand type a status... like Skype. i add 1 everyday.. for example:
1/25 wfh... unavailable after 2:00

We need a custom message status PLEASE!!!! Very frustrating
Custom status message is essential especially with remote teams or heavy travelers. Also, as was pointed out in other comments, hard to do without this when other apps, including Skype, have this.
Not having this is a big reason to hold back switching over from S4B
For those of us migrating from use of Skype to Teams, this is must-have.
This is basic functionality for any chat/messaging systems, and very useful to have custom statuses and this can be used as "office presence" board. Must be synced with Outlook calendar to reflect out of office, holidays, or vacations statuses. Or custom override.
In SFB We utilize a lot the presence feature like "What's happening today?". We will need it in Teams. Our workers are so accustomed to this feature that I hesitating to implement Teams whithout it.
We are looking for a custom status so that users can update their status.

when might we get that "off work" status for teams?
