If you paste a link it should embed the media right in the chat (Gif, mp4, youtube, Vimeo, Soundcloud etc.)
The team has not made a decision on whether to move forward with this feature. We will update when we have new status to share.

It would be great if I can watch the video directly in the Teams window without having to download or go out of the application.

And not just posting in chat, but also uploading a video file. It correctly shows the video icon, but when you click on the video, it brings up a browser in which I have authenticate to. Just embed a video player. Much better user experience.

To take it a step further, it would be great if a tab of a channel could be hosting the embed. Case in point, manager has a large idea, and it all begins with a video they saw on one of the popular streaming video networks (youtube, Vimeo, etc). We want to make this a source/starting point of the discussion and always available to the channel.

It would also be nice if there was some connection to the SharePoint Videos channels. It would be nice to share videos already uploaded to SharePoint within Teams.
I assume this covers both uploading a video file and sharing a link to youtube
I complete agree.
So when you post a video in chat you can play it there and then. Without having to follow the link
