A team template!! Much like sharepoint document site or site templates that contain a specific layout and set of documents this would be amazing for a team template. We could deploy a team for each project we had that had a preset assignment of planner tasks and documents attached to it and a preset of channels that goes with that team. Could really make a big difference in the way we deploy and use teams.
This item is still queued up in the backlog. No additional details are available at this moment.
This feature is really needed by teachers and professors all over the world. It is not enough to have templates that replicate the channel/tabs structure. Classes have lots of content and collaborative documents that do not change much from one period to the next. Also building again everything is a problem when we have several groups in the same period and want to coordinate clases. In our case, replicating everything in 20 teams is a lot of unnecessary work. It would be really helpful to include files and notes in the template. From what I see in the teams roadmap, it seems that you will have a teams template update in mid 2019. Do you think it is possible to include a checkbox allowing to replicate files and notes from the template?
Being able to create a team with documents copied would be very helpful. We have many templates that we would like to copy "empty" into a team, so the team can work through them as part of some activity (e.g. project estimation template, procurement template, operational support model template etc.).
A comment below about this not being "best practice" makes sense if the documents are all copies and are not intended to evolve uniquely with each new team instance. I agree, the last thing we want is 50 copies of the same document (e.g. a guide). However, providing links to documents stored in a public team site would ensure that only one copy of each document (e.g. a guide) exist but is accessible from all the teams in a read-only format.
We definitely want this from a sales opportunity pursuit perspective. We set up a team for every new opportunity pursuit we undertake. Today all we can do is set up a Team Template with a consistent channel structure. The tabs, even if copied don't populate (notebook, planner etc.) and even the channel-level folders aren't created in SharePoint until the 'Files' tab in the Team, created from the Template Team, is accessed. Ultimately we need to be able have a Team Template where tab/app content can be copied over and a folder structure can be copied over at the Channel Level and below. In addition, a big wish-list item is to be able to customize the 'Documents' document library in a Team Template (e.g. added columns/properties for metadata tagging, versioning etc.) so that when we create a Team from a Team Template, we are able to consistently use these rich SharePoint capabilities for every opportunity pursuit.
I agree, our project office wants to use teams but there is not a simple way to create a template site and copy the content and design they want to a new site. This was possible in SharePoint but not Teams. Can we get this functionality for copying content and design.
I agree having a template that copies tab information, documents, MS Workflow, PowerApp, and underlying SharePoint site structure would be so helpful for my organization. It will provide consistency within our CPMO project sites and less administrative work for our project managers.
While waiting for the full-featured template, an easy work around is described here https://sharepoint-specialist.nu/how-to-create-a-template-from-a-microsoft-team-1ac88fbdd3ec
Still zilch... come on, some traction would be great!

I'm seeing "Create a team using an existing team as a template" option which is a great step in the right direction. I had hoped that work done on the associate SharePoint site would also be replicated when using this feature but that doesn't currently happen. One of the keys ways we've used Teams is for communication for cross-team projects. Those often have things like issue/risk lists in SharePoint. On-prem we would have a SharePoint site template where these were pre-configured and tying that into the Teams model would be awesome!
This would save so much time! Each of our channels in the team should have a "Notes" tab, Excel tab to hold our project plan, conversation, and files. From there, the different teams might have additional items, but if all the channels started with the same set of configurations, that would save a lot of time and ensure consistency.
Hi Warren, Do you have an update yet?

I have created a new Idea but should probably be here as it's an enhancement on the Team Templates https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/34915231-when-creating-a-new-team-from-the-teams-templates
I would Like the following copied from my template sites I created
include the SharePoint structure behind the Teams Please

While a team template would be wonderful I would just like to stress the importance of a Planner task template at this time. Much easier for development. The use of the planner is some what diminished in our organization because every time you create a new team you have to reinvent the wheel as far as the tasks go. It is easier to create a template OneNote which contains a check list but this is not as efficient. Please consider the creation of specifically tasks templates on a more immediate schedule.

Hello Warren, some people have already started seeing the option to Create a new team using a previous one as template. Does that mean this is already Rolling out in waves? On the Roadmap we still see it <In Development>.

Please include the SharePoint structure behind the Teams as part of the template as well. It is as important as the tabs, channels, etc....
We use standard Lists and Document Libraries for all projects, so it will be very helpful.
Since Office 365 is pushing hard towards the implementation of Teams, being able to save and use templates eases the deployment process, just as it does with Sharepoint site collections.
We do implementation projects so we basically do the same thing over and over with different clients with minor variations.
Being able to create a new team from and existing team is great but the functionality you have today is soooooooo limited it only saves you like 5 minutes of work.
I’m sure the ability to create real team templates is a lot of work (thinking about the process and steps to allow users to build templates….) but if we could at least take a snapshot of an existing team (all channels, tabs, data….) copy it and rename it that would provide us the same functionality without all the “template” process. How fast could you whip that up?
How big is the backlog? Kind of surprised this story has not made it's way to the top yet.
We need Templates too.
