Edit Office documents without leaving Teams
While it's wonderful you can view docs shared with a team and said doc gets placed in share-point. The moment you edit the doc you get sent to a web-browser. Considering it's literally HTML, it would be nice if that session presented with within Teams rather than a separate browser pop up. It would make the collaboration process more seamless as well s allow people to continue their persistent chat in teams while editing and not be tempted to use the suddenly disjointed chat built into word/excel.
I feel the more seamless this experience is (only pop up word if I ask for it, otherwise just present it all through teams), the happier people will be.
Hi everyone, this feature is completed and will ship to your clients soon. Some of you may have received it too soon (our error, not yours) and then seen it mysteriously disappear. Don’t worry, it’s coming back! :-)
It will also be noted and instructions will be provided in our Release Notes. You can find release notes when you start a conversation with T-Bot (Release Notes will appear in his tabs) or you can go to this external website: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Release-notes-for-Microsoft-Teams-d7092a6d-c896-424c-b362-a472d5f105de

I found that feature in one of the previous releases. However, for now, it is gone – even in the dev preview. Any timeline on this feature?

On Windows and MAC version of Teams you just removed ability to edit documents directly in application. In addition on MAC version you also removed option to edit document in Excel application - only option left from the menu is Online. This adds multiple unnecessary steps we need to do in order to edit document and I don't see the point of keeping desktop application on my computer.

Is it possible to add easy check out/check in functionality to the 'Edit in Teams' experience?

I see that editing Excel in teams is now supported, essentially by using Teams as a browser and leveraging Excel Online. I think this is great.
But, there is a context issue. For instance, if you try to tab between cells, it starts tabbing within Teams itself; not very useful. Is this something that is coming as well?
I just posted the same comment under another thread.

Currently we have the ability to put a document in a tab on a channel and view from there directly (very cool). But it would very nice if it would work as if it were in Excel/Word Online, etc and give users the ability to collaborate real-time. I can eview a document or spreadsheet, and interact with it, but I can't edit it without opening in my desktop app or the online version.
I'd love for the Exel/Word/etc-online to work directly in Teams so that we could edit in the tab and have others see our work real time.

When opening Ms Word documents from a Team Assignment (Teams for Edu), one has the options to open it *in place* for editing in Word Online, opening with Word Online in the browser, or opening the document in Word 2016. However, when opening a Word document from a Teams tab, one only has the options to open the document in the browser or Word 2016 for editing. It would be wonderful if the same functionality that is available from a Teams Assignment would be available from the Tab.

You have my vote!
This feature would help with the issue of users using a desktop app that disallows others from editing the document in the cloud.
Just to add a little: this would make the implementation of tabs with i.e. Excel spreadsheets so much more useful in teams. Right now we're using Google spreadsheets vie the Website functionality but would love to switch over to Excel online.
Completely agree. Google has this capability, why can't Microsoft, especially since Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and etc are significantly better IMO
when a Mac user opens a Office document directly it opens in a Viewer. There is an edit button, but the only option is to Open in Word online. On a PC, there is an option to open in Word Online and Word. If the Mac user clicks the ellipsis, this will open in Word Online, and there is an option to open in Word.

Abso-lutely! Our team (pun) is trying to make sense of the rather horrible mess of file storage in Office 365 (SharePoint Libraries vs. OneDrive for Business vs. Groups). The real 'a-ha!' moment for me was the file management inside the desktop Teams app: suddenly there's a concise, consistent interface for us to manage files primarily in Groups (wrapped in the Teams interface on desktop).
TL;DR next to the Open in SharePoint button it'd be nice to see an Open in Word button (or other office apps... and eventually also native PDF viewers, Photoshop, etc.)
it is currently a lot of extra steps to open in Office app.
Also, just to add, when I goto the folder where the file is located and click "open in sharepoint" instead of clicking on the file directly, I can then edit the file in-place in sharepoint and it will save in its current location. Kind of odd considering when clicking the file and selecting 'edit in browser' is essentially taking you to the same location...
Microsoft, what is the status of this request? Editing within Teams is important, but the most important is versioning control. Every time a user edits a file nested inside a complex set of folders, a "copy" of the file is saved to the root channel folder as its replacement!!?!?! This cant be. They want to edit that file in place and when it auto-saves, it should be saving back in its original location.
Please verify this...

When the work-in-progress is release it would be great if "disjointed chat built into word/excel" is integrated so that even if the document is being edited in a separate tab/window (and multiple views into Teams is really useful) the chat stream remains constant.
We like the persistence of the Teams chat and do not like the word/excel chat which states "This chat won't be saved when you close the file".

This is particularly important on mobile apps. With storage space at a premium on mobile devices, making users install a separate app to view and edit documents on mobile is a big thing to ask.
A web-view browser session would solve this issue and make it accessible to many more.
I noticed this works on iOS, but Android asks you to install the corresponding office app (word, excel, etc.)

It really makes it difficult to use Teams to it's full potential when you can't even collaborate on a document within the application. If I add a document to a tab, whether a Word, Excel, or other type, I should be able to edit without leaving the application.
