Ability to archive channels
Would be nice if we had the ability to archive channels. For example: we created a channel for a specific project. Once the project is complete, we can archive that channel or at least move it out of the primary view. I could see the channel list getting large and clunky quickly with multiple projects many of which are complete.
Also, when a conversation in the channel is complete it should be archived or hidden.
This item remains on the backlog.

if this isn't a feature yet do you have any recommendations on how to manage channels with a lot of posts in it?

Being able to hide/archive posts in a private channel would be a most logical feature set and much appreciated!

It's useful to use a channel for a focussed discussion on a specific topic by members of an existing team. It doesn't even have to be a whole project, perhaps a tricky aspect of a project. This way, related discussion is kept in one place, team members who are not interested/have nothing to contribute avoid seeing extra noise in the channels they usually use, but the discussion is transparent/visible to the whole team.
Once these discussions have come to their conclusion, it makes sense to archive the channels. Their contents would be preserved but their access permissions become read-only unless an administrator undoes the archival. Archived channels should be hidden from the channel listing (perhaps only reachable via a new "see archived channels" feature).
Currently the only option appears to be to delete the old channel, which would have the unwanted side-effect of deleting their contents. In our org (and I suspect many others) we cannot have that because the channel contents must be kept on-record for future reference.
An alternative which would suffice for us would be to be able to export a channel's contents (discussions etc) to an archival file format. PDF would be fine for us. This would enable us to keep a record of the contents in a read-only format, and then it would be reasonable for us to go ahead and delete the channel.
There are not many items on our Teams wishlist which are more important than this one.
Please provide this option - it's been on the backlog for years!
Really need this functionality
Archiving channels would be a great feature. Is this something that is in the pipeline?
Please, we plan with this events and every event is in a separate channel, so we need to archive the old ones to see the new ones

Archiving a team also archives private channels in the team and their associated site collections. However, you can still add or remove members and update roles and you can still view all the team activity in standard and private channels, files, and chats

You could just hide it...
Please make channel archiving possible. Critical for our workflow.
+1, that is defintely necessary in a fast-paced environment.

The list is getting bigger day by day. Hoping the archiving function will be created soon.
How can such a fundamental need (from the community) be on the backlog?
I need to be able to govern my infrastructure.
Do you want to accumulate junk data? Coz' that's how an organisation becomes a data horder.

Hoping early 2021
This seems a massive, obvious oversight, as it is present in a lot of similar apps. Also hard to see why it's particularly difficult to implement.
I came to this while looking for a way to export the contents of a channel so that my company would have its contents recorded somewhere while still being able to delete it. I want to archive it, basically. Turns out there is no way to export the channel's contents either... 😭

This is absolutely needed. Huge detriment to the teams workflow when you don't need a whole team for a project so you use channels inside a project management team.
I'm archiving many teams, some have private channels.
Those teams can't be archived.
It's really annoying.
I really hope this to be able to do, because it's really missing!

✅ This is possible with SphereShield Channel Management by AGAT
Check it out, also allows to export channels to PDF, Move channels, and more

What is the alternative to keeping the conversations while we wait for the back log?
