Ability to archive channels
Would be nice if we had the ability to archive channels. For example: we created a channel for a specific project. Once the project is complete, we can archive that channel or at least move it out of the primary view. I could see the channel list getting large and clunky quickly with multiple projects many of which are complete.
Also, when a conversation in the channel is complete it should be archived or hidden.
This item remains on the backlog.

Once we archive a channel, we need the conversation history to remain and not to count towards the channel limit within a Team. Please and thank you!
Add me to the list, I totaly agree: archiving a channel should be a basic function. thanks!

I carry the same sentiment as many here, channel limits and views will become cluttered quickly without this.
I would almost say it should be a client wide toggle to hide or show things marked as archive. This could hide archived channels and chats from view and search results - the latter would surely increase efficiency and data center performance.

I am hoping that this feature arrives before our Teams setup collapses due to large number of channels.
Archiving a channel is a must, but it would be nice to have it coupled with exporting a channel conversation to a document, renaming a channel and the associated folder together, or moving a channel to a different team. I would really like all of these features, but would settle for much less. Just let me hide the channel for the team without making members do something. And give me the ability to make a channel read only.
Add me to the list! Archiving a channel should be a basic function.
To bring the best out of Teams in our day to day work the option for archiving channels would be very important! now we are removing channels and all information is lost.
Archiving channels would be very helpful to meet our retention policies.

Yeah, the lack of support for basic channels lifecycle makes Team feel so clunky!

Hi there, just want to reiterate the recommendation of the original poster... which looks like it was posted almost 4 years ago? Wow, Microsoft. Four years, huh? Archiving a team is a great feature, but archiving a channel within a team (for example, at the completion of a certain project the team is working on) is equally important. And might I add, it's a pretty basic feature with probably very low lift on the product development side.
Is there an update on whether this feature is on the roadmap or what the timeline to completion is?
Please allow archiving of channels ... most restrictive without.
If I am reading this correctly, in 3 years you have not been able to figure out how to export or download a copy of an open teams chat? What type of IT teams do you have working for you? This is absolutely a must have for many businesses and needs to be looked into.
Opened on Nov 03 2016??? Ah you can do better MS.
This is an essential feature, please prioritise this
This item is necessary!! Otherwise, channels get really cluttered.

Please consider implementing this feature. Wonder what's needed to make you reconsider the priority of this feature. Over 10k votes seems to me quite convincing that there is a huge demand for this functionality...
In my case, it's the primary obstacle for creating ad-hoc Channels for smaller projects where we want to keep the chat history for future reference. And yep: a single conversation is not sufficient for this use case.
Am using a single Team as a communication tool across our organization. Each Channel within the team is a separate projects and we are using the Posts section to deliver the latest status of for each Channel (projects). I can see us going over the 200 channel limit over the year. It would be nice if there was no limit to channels AND the ability to Archive Channel for future reference.
Does anybody have a built-in workaround for this problem? I have a Team closing fast on 200 channels. 30% of those are closed, but I need to keep the content of the chats, files etc.
AGAT Software have a simple solution for this.
I would love to build a channel per (Planner) task workflow using Power Automate, but the limitation of 200 channels per team and the inability to archive channels makes it impossible. Being able to archive and unarchive channels as needed would be great if it could bypass the 200 channel limit. Maybe the 200 channel limit could be for active channels which makes sense IMO.
