No URL support at all?
When I paste a URL it just shows up as plain text and my coworkers must copy and paste it manually into a browser...
Yes, we do support URLs, so they should appear as hyperlinks when you copy and paste them into Teams.
As you pointed out in your comment, there are a number of URL formats that do not parse. That’s an issue on whatever website you’re pasting from; its not on the part of Teams functionality.
Let me know if you have any questions on this!

I really miss support for active URL's in the Wiki. It works nicely in the 'Conversations' (well, maybe some minor bugs as stated in other comments)...

URLs with non ASCII chars also fail to be recognized.
Even a simple hyperlink like https://company.sharepoint.com/teams/team/SitePages/Page.aspx isn't recognized and made clickable in the Windows desktop app.

URLs containing spaces are not properly parsed despite being enclosed in <>.
<https://company.sharepoint.com/teams/sitename/Shared Documents/A File.docx> will be converted to <https://company.sharepoint.com/teams/sitename/Shared> only.
In Skype for Business, the URL will parse properly when enclosed in <>
Sorry it appears there is URL support but a surprising number of URL formats do not parse. For instance:
