Windows app should be in the Windows store
Even if there won't be a modern UWP app for Teams, the Win32 app should be available through the Microsoft Store so it is discoverable by Windows 10 users (that's where I looked first, with no luck of course).
This feature is still in the works. There was some adjustments to the overall strategy.
I’ll try to get some additional details and share them with you.

Still working on it after 2 years and half? maybe this link can help you out
Make Teams an UWP app with beautiful fluent design and distribute it exclusively through Microsoft Store. All new features should be always Windows first. Have some imagination, make it happen ASAP.

What is so difficult in Microsoft publishing it's own apps in it's own Store? This is ridiculous! Not being in the Windows Store should be the exception, not the norm.
Any update on this?
It is almost an year. Still no updates. UWP & Fluent design elements are very much needed
This is such an oversight. Does Microsoft support the Store or not? We're locking down our PCs in such a manner that our users simply won't be able to download and install executables whether from Microsoft or no. A Store app makes sense.

It would make sense to turn Teams into a PWA, which would then make it possible to distribute it through Microsoft Store.
This would bring a lot of positive impact, like
* Easier for users: True single experience across all platforms, screen resolutions and ratios.
* Easier for developers: Less code to maintain for the developers, I believe.
* Easier for sysadmins: Easier to deploy, less management overhead. Don't have to keep a MSI in Intune up to date, just use Microsoft Store for Business instead.
Hi Microsoft. Is there any update on this? MSI based deployment is very poor with Intune. Store based app is a must have.

Even one of the nearest competitor (Slack) has its app on the Microsoft Store !
This is so confusing - Teams webapp, win32, android and iOS, even Surface Hub, but no app in native windows store. It feels MS doesn't understand what seamless should be - instead it is so convoluted and lacks any logic. Trying to buy-in into this ecosystem but it just keeps to show rookie failure one afer the other. Come on, hire someone who knows thing or two about strategy and customer experience.
This week has been very embarrassing.... I have been building a system around Microsoft teams for our organization, but this week I've had to borrow other peoples computers to show them how Teams works. Using the browser version on my Surface Go is not cutting it.... way to many websites don't support being used in frames, so I'm having to leave Teams to view any of our tabbed website pages. Please make another Microsoft Store version available ASAP
This is devastating :( Why why WHY would they pull Teams from the Microsoft Store??? The store version should be the PRIMARY version. I just hope it doesn't take long for them to figure out the HUGE mistake ~:[

What is the official advice for Windows S-mode users when you stop the preview app working next week?
Ryan Morash commented
Any additional details you can share would be great considering you are discontinuing the current PWA in the Microsoft Store next month.

If this ( https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9NSV22GV8Q6N ) is the new Store App, why does the name restrict it to being the "Windows S" version? I thought the goal was for ALL Windows software to eventually be installed/updated/removed through the Store.

Nice 😁 "WORKING ON IT",
I hope the windows teams app for S mode.

Make the app available to all users, not just Windows 10 S!
Any updates here? Would be great to deploy Teams using the Windows Store for Business.

Any updates (since RS4 is shipping with PWA support)? We also need a share target for Teams in the share dialog.
