Multi-window for chats and more
I want to have separate top-level windows for each person I'm chatting with, rather than tabs.
We acknowledge the demand for this capability and are exploring the best possible solutions to enable this.
Feature is really important for our organization as well, please implement it soon!
Need this feature badly to attend meeting and chat with other members at the same time
It's difficult to work when in a video conference and needing to chat with others at the same time. We shouldn't need to open a browser to have chat open at the same time.
Completely agree. Being slaved to a single window in an application where I may be text chatting with someone and need to update a planner card, meeting, or conversation in the same app is more than inconvenient. Being able to have multiple windows of this app running would be an enormous productivity increase for me.
Please give update. We need to be able to chat with Multiple people and also support dual screen during the meeting. 1 screen for video and 1 screen for document share.
I'd just prefer to be able to pop the entire chat section out into it's own window. It's insanely disruptive that any time I want to chat with someone, I have to navigate away from the file, team, planner, etc that I was working on instead of being able to pop the chat out into its own window. I hear this complaint from my users all the time.
My comment is for the "and more" part of this request. I am of extreme interest in having a separate window in meetings for presentation and participants, particularly 360 degree conference room cameras. I am a remote employee who is always joining remotely, and find the ability to have different windows for the presentation and the main branch conference room's camera extremely helpful, as I did in Skype for Business. As our company moves to replace SfB with Teams, I have a lot of grievances with not being able to do the same in Teams!
I wouldn't want this feature especially - but I would like to be able to work in the teams area, and the chats area at the same time, maybe by duplicating the window.

I definitely agree! I even mentioned this to a co-worker that we need this option.

Respecting those who have announced their requirement to Multi-windows for chats, I'd say it can be very useful for those who may chat with more than 1 person simultaneously, but not for someone like me who would chat a lot during a day, but not with multiple people at the same time.
Actually, the story began when Skype kept suggesting me to "Try it out" and I eventually accepted it and now:
1- I have to double-click every time on anyone to whom I'm going to send a message or to read their sent messages.
2- A new window, beside the main one, is just a mess in the Taskbar.
3- Big windows (the default size, when the chat window opens up) simply mean "long lines of messages" which are visually (and from a brain point) difficult to be read, in comparison to reading short lines.
4- Resizing the Chat Window to a proper size won't be remembered for the next time you open it.
For all these reasons, I didn't really find this idea useful at all and I want to get back to previous form of messaging (on the right hand side of the main window) but, unfortunately, I can't figure it out how.
Either, there is no option to Disable/Enable it at all, or again one of those (what I call) "Artistic Actions" of Microsoft has happened (!), reminding me of what they did to the "Shut Down" button in Windows 8.0, which had been moved from under the well-known "Start" button to a less sense-making place "Control Panel -> Power options -> Shut Down"; a place that no one could think of for the first time s/he had Windows 8.0 installed! (Of course, "Power Options" makes more sense to include the "Shut Down", only and only if it would have been there from the birth date of Windows, not after so many years being under "Start" which made everybody get used to it; despite those jokes made by General Motors that said "If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, then you'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off!!!...
Anyway, please somebody kindly help me on this matter.

Would love to move from Skype to Teams for a mid-sized firm, but really need this feature to make it happen!
Looking forward to this feature! Now I need to stop working on a doc etc. to see the chat...

Is there any update on this? I would really like this feature.

This would be an excellent and useful update! My colleagues and I are looking forward to it rolling out!
It's been 7 months since this was set to "WORKING ON IT" status. Is it really that complex? Could we please have a progress update as we too are soon to be forced from 'Skype for Business' to MS Teams chat and would really like the same functionality to translate across to.
Any updates, please? This is not a nice-to-have feature but a must have since a lot of people was forced to migrate from Skype for Business wherein this fx is part ofnits core.

Agreed, how is this progressing?

Would like to keep the meeting always on top, too!
Please work on this or give an update.
